It takes 3 days without sugar to get over sugar cravings. The cheats or refeeds help me but I know the next 6 days there will be no cheating and I just look forward to the next one.
For those of you who do planned weekly cheats, do you find it helps you stay focused the rest of the time or does it make you want junk food worse? How can I cheat without constantly wanting junk food afterwards?
I can do it
I WILL be a size 5.

I've found that I can only pull it off if it's very deliberate and planned. It won't work for me to say "Sunday is my cheat day or cheat meal". Inevitably I wind up seeing something good on Saturday or I have little random stupid cheats all day long.
I have to tell myself that it will be Sunday (or Saturday if there's some "event") and then I have to decide in advance exactly what my cheat will be. That way it's done when it's done. I can't be trusted to play it by ear at this point. Also, I only get the amount that I intend to eat. If I want pizza - that's easy b/c no matter how much I get the bf will eat the rest. But if I want something he doesn't like then I have to get single serving size b/c leftovers will wake me in the night.
I know some people also like to have their cheat as their last meal so they go to bed and then it's over. I prefer to have it for my 2nd to last meal and then eat my normal last meal so I can be "back on track" the same day.

Interesting... Ive been re-feeding every 3rd day with tremendous success however i noticed going any longer than that was really tough. My body screams for carbs and i cant sleep without spiking my insulin.Originally Posted by Jodi

that seems like a very general statement to say "it takes 3 days to get over sugar cravings"?
do you know out of all of his articles the explanation for that particular statement?
What are you talking about........I was talking about Leptin, refeeds and cheating.
The sugar statement is a general statement and I meant it to be general. Typically people feel releived of sugar cravings after a few days without sugar.

"If you eat alot and workout hard and consistantly you will make good gains"
I rather just prefer to have a planned free meal or day.. a day where if I feel the urge to treat myself to something I enjoy, then I will. Most of the time its low in sugar anywaysBut to be quite honest, I enjoy the food I eat normally, or else I wouldnt eat it. You need to find foods that you enjoy and feel satisfied with, ones that are good for you.
I also think it greatly depends on the person and their eating habits and history. If one comes from a background of eating disorders, binging tendencies or such, then I feel taking a whole day of more laid back eating isnt going to go over well for such a person. Its not so much a pig out day or meal.
I say give yourself a "reward" if you so choose to call it that, one meal and a dessert or alike.
another thing to keep in mind.... "cravings" are often mental as well. You need to learn to fight them off and come to better peace with your daily eating habits.... if your not happy with the way you eat, then that is what needs to be worked on, not spending so much time in the daydreams of foods you know are not going to help with your goals.
" To dream anything you want to dream: That is the beauty of the human mind. To do anything you want to do: That is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limits: that is the courage to succeed."
this is very true (at least for me). it's a choice we all face. we can either eat X (fill in the blank) or skip X to get closer to our goals. this may not be a popular thing for me to say...but i think we sometimes overcomplicate this stuff. in the end it's about discipline and choices. i'm not saying it's easy (i've sure struggled at times!) but it is a lot simpler than we sometimes admit.Originally Posted by atherjen

Very true. I'm not saying that it's easy, but it really just comes down to, "Is eating this (fill in the blank) really going to help me achieve my goals?" Simple concept, yet hard to adhere to.Originally Posted by nikegurl

i have a cheat day to look forward to every week. i dont face too many cravings during the week. if i come across 1, i ask myself, is the taste of this worth losing the momentum i have made this week. the answer is no and the craving goes away.
I give myself permission to cheat anytime I want to, but before I can cheat I have to eat a small carton of NF cottage chesse, 2 whole eggs and a can of mixed veggies. I have never cheated after this. Just my way.
It doesn't have to be high in sugar
I have an urge to cheat every day. By cheat, though, I mean more oatmeal, another piece of fruit, more chicken, only clean foods. However I'm so anal I never end up eating a stalk of broccoli more than I'm supposed to. One day a week I have one more carb meal than I'm supposed to though. I can't even remember the last time I didn't eat clean...probably cheesecake with my girl three months ago.
Peace.
T DOT O.
It is kind of hard for me to "plan" my cheats. Every few weeks or so I might have a cheat meal but it is usually something fairly healthy. Actually when I start eating healthy and and get my will power going it is pretty easy to stay on track. Plus I feel so much better when I am feeding my body what it needs.
I rarely cheat. I used to be a fast food 3x+ a week kind of guy, but for the past year & 1/2 I haven't had ANY at all. My diet has been strictly planned & followed for a pretty long time now. Ocassionally, I would have ice cream, etc., but kept to a minimum.
...Then came this week...![]()

I went away on vacation with buddies whose diets have convinced me they are trying to be fat. Despite this, I decided to let loose, & eat whatever they did for the four days I was gone. (My buddies knew this & planned to make sure they ate their worst). I started the week off with White Castles for dinner first night, Pizza Hut the second night... you get the point. For a second there I swear I could feel myself getting fatter, but like Jodi has said before... you only live once..enjoy it.
Because of looming guilt, I did some cardio at the hotel each night.. but if anything it has re-lit my desire to eat clean. I had fun, but I could never go back to eating that way. Oh well, back to the real world now.
I know what you mean. When you haven't eaten that crap in a long time you wonder how you used to live on it all the time.
Enjoy it yes, so long as you don't hurt your goals or body in the processOriginally Posted by busyLivin

I'm not fat at all... never really was. I'm not looking to compete or anything, but I'll be damned if I'm going to work my ass off in the gym & blow any gains due to a poor diet. I want a particular physique & it won't be easy to get. Like I said... I now prefer to eat clean.
