    what's wrong with milk

    I don't see milk in diet plans, except from Men's Health magazine which recommends about 4 cups a day.

    But what's wrong with milk? My skimmed milk has 22 grams of protein and only 40 carbs per 1/2 litre carton.

    Also milk is between 30 and 40 on the GI scale and has a carb load of about 10 (whatever that means). Sounds OK to me. What do you guys think?

    Well that was my question too and I was told if your cutting, and you want to get really lean then yes cut out all dairy and limit fruits due to the sugar in them. But say your bulking or just maintaining then there nothing wrong with some milk/dairy and fruits

    milk has a low GI but is high on the insulin index...not realy good to consume if losing bf is a problem for you
    I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

    Would Soy Milk be any better for you? I switched from Milk to soy Milk cause of the fiber and theres a lil less sugar in it

    Soy has been reported repeatedly to increase estrogen, which again, you would not want while cutting as it will give that "wet" look.

    why high on the insulin index? I dont think i quite understand the difference....

    The milk protein, casein, can irritate the immune system and stimulate mucus production worsening allergy symptoms also. I get itchy eyes and a stuffy nose if i pound the milk like a madman, so i stay at a happy medium. The cheap protein is worth it. I say if you can digest lactose, then drink your milk, SKIM milk that is.

    it all depends. the insulin index does not work the same as the GI index when it comes to food combinations and lowering the GI of a meal. say for example you will get a higher insulin response when you mix milk and another protein source then you would with just plan milk...

    Other than the fattening characteristics of milk, does the normal person really need to be concerned with insulin index?

    I only drink a glass or two a day of 2% low fat milk.. I know the 2% really doesn't mean anything, still fattening.

    Well on a side note- during highschool I was drinking 4cartons of milk/day- thats 1 liter plus some in cereal, etc.
    I stayed very lean and digested it well.
    Dont forget that many studies indicate that calcium plays a role in fatloss... and cant forget bone density!

    I say that if one is not on a strict competition diet and can tolerate low fat dairy, by all means there is no reason to shun it. IMO anyways.

    I have also recently been told that when you are cutting, that you want to eliminate milk because you keep a layer of calcium between your skin and muscles and that eliminating the calcium from the milk will reduce that subdermal layer. I have also been told that lactose messes with your blood sugar unlike other sugars in that it stays in your bloodstream longer than other sugars.
