    Scales

Dont know where to put this thread.

Which are more accurate for weighting yourself-analog or digital scales?

Ive been using a digital scale (the same one) for several months. It seemed to be accurate, until my BF had to weight the lawnmower on it for some stupid reason, now it is registering 5 pounds heavier for me when I step on it. I know I didnt gain 5 pounds in 2 days.

    Help!!

I can't speak for everyone, but my digital scale stinks(50$$)...I get a different reading everytime I step on the thing..The differences are only small (3-5 lbs) so I weigh myself 3 times and kinda guess from the averages what my weight is.

A high quality analog scale is on my shopping list right now and my digi scale will soon be in the garbage.

Cause we got charged a lot of $$$$ cause how much the lawnmower weighed. We got it shipped in the mail.

I try not to ever weigh myself, however, there are two scales I've used, the one at my trainer's gum, which is the one with the red dial (analog is what you call it?), and the one at the grocery store. It's huge, also with a dial, not digital. It's apparently one of the most accurate scales in town, as doctors have even advised me to go weigh myself there when in doubt. haha!

I gallon of water weighs 8.33 pounds. Check your digital scale to see how that gallon reads on your scale. Weigh yourself with and without the jug. Now you know if the scale reads acurately or not. If the difference is 8.33 pounds plus 5 pounds (or 2 pounds) than flip the scale and look for the adjustment.

    .
If you weigh yourself during different times of the day, the results will be different. Try and fix a date and time to get consistant results. E.g. i Always weigh myself on sunday morning before breakfast.

I am aware of what you are saying...I should have been more specific. I'll step on the scale and it might say that I weigh 220 lbs but I know I weigh more like 225 lbs, so I'll step off try again immediately and I'll get a different result. Then I can get off try again and get a different weight so I kinda average (guess) my weight. My digital scale is crap.

Digital or analog...just depends on how it's calibrated.

A liter weighs about 2.2 lbs., so 8.33 lbs. for a gallon sounds about right.

scales are crap in general :P, I drop one of my weights on my digital one about 3 weeks ago and ever since then it been giving me really different results, 2 week ago it said I was 122 so I was happy that I gained and yesterday I decided I wanted to see how I was doign and it said I was 124, was even more happy then I got back on it today and I was 127 (I did all these weighings on a sunday morning before breakfast and 1 on saturday before breakfast) I knew I didn't gain 3 pounds in one day so I went upstairs and got our other scale with the needle thing, and that one says I'm 120 - 121 so I'm a little pissed damn scales

My tanita digital scale seems to work fine when it comes to the weight (it measures 1/2 lbs too) but the bodyfat% readouts suck! So I just use it for weighing in.

I used to have an analog one and I found out that when the scale is on a carpeted floor I weighed a lot more--maybe like 10lbs more--than when I used it on a tiled/bathroom floor. Don't ask me why

I fluxuate up to 5 pounds in one day sometimes. Water weight, food in your system, and a host of other factors can explain this. I always try to weigh my self right when I get up to keep things consistent. That may be your problem.

I weigh myself first thing in the morning and it says 30-31% but I am really 24%. When I was preparing for my first contest I used it alot and it would say 26-27% but I was actually 14% (according to calipers).

The reason it is off so much is because the stupid scale doesn't factor in water weight fluctuations into your LBM..it just adds the water weight to your bodyfat readout. In the morning it might say I am 31% because I am dehydrated but later in the day I would be less. It is very undependable! I only use it to track my weight; and then use the tape measure to determine if what I lost or gained was fat or muscle. As for weighing, I have no problems with funky readouts. It seems to work pretty good for just weighing.
