Protein only? No. You need complex carbs to fuel your energy for the workout. Some protein is OK, but focus on carbs.

Unless you have a fast metabolism, I think 30 minutes may be too little time. I use 45 minutes and suggest 45-75 minutes for most people depending on their metabolism.

I'm naturally husky, therefore my metabolism isn't amazing, and I eat almost immediately before I workout. I wake up and eat breakfast, organize my weights, write down all my starting weights for each lift, and get to lifting. Works for me. If I wait 75 minutes, then I will start to get hungry towards the end of my session.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

If I eat 2 hours before working out, I end up being very very hungry during my workout

I think a general guideline is 30-60 minutes with just a whey shake and 2-2 1/2 hours with a whole food meal containing any animal tissue (turkey, chicken, beef, etc.)
