My brother wants to start lifting but does not want to buy any supps, I insisted he need a good post w/o shake and we have come up with this:

16oz. skim milk
1 banana
2 tbsp. of peanut butter

500 cals, 23g protein, 48g carbs, 16g fat (from pb, only 3 saturated)

Will the peanut butter actually mix?

Why not buy some whey powder?

Please refer to this thread.

Particularly the Gopro statements about milk post workout.

Does he realize that whey protein is good, lol....what's his problem w/ it?

Taking into consideration the other thread referenced and the fact he doesn't want a protein supp, he'd have to take whole foods, which will obviously not be absorbed as quickly, however, if he's brand new to training I bet he could eat just about any combo of carbs/protein and still gets those newbie gains, lol.

I would go w/ a fruit smoothie w/ yogurt and milk + some high gi carb of some sort. Maybe add some pasturized egg whites (from the carton) to the shake?

I can understand that, but is whey protein powder really a "supplement"?

those are things I usually add to my whey. you shouldn't have any problem with the peanut butter as long as you use a blender and don't use crunchy. if you (he) is worried about sugar go for the natural Pb. 16oz of milk bothers my stomach and the stomachs of a lot of people, so make sure that isn't a problem. I do think he should get himself some whey, it's not going to hurt.

Mike, If he doesnt' want to purchase any whey, then go back to plan "A". Getting something in your system that is protein and carb rich after a workout is more important than doing nothing because you just "don't" want it. Here's a short article he could read that gives a little detail about different proteins. I said "little". It might help him make up his mind or point toward the next best thing.

It's gotta have some steel in it to last. I have a cheap one at the office, but glass and steel at the house.
