2400 cals is a bulk? How much do you weigh?
Hello,
I'm trying to bulk a bit right now and am eating about 2400 calories a day. Usually though, I don't get home from work until around 7:30 so I eat supper at 8:00 (500 calories) and then a snack right before bed at 11:00 (300). So I'm eating about 800 calories between 8 and 11:30 at night. It's clean food, usually tuna and veggies with oatmeal for supper and then egg whites and another 1/4 cup oatmeal before bed, but is it too much to be eating so late at night? Will this just promote fat storage instead of muscle?
Thanks!
BerryBlis

You'd be suprised. I'm hovering around 210 and I'm eating about 2700 cals, some days I'm going as low as 2100.
Now I have a slow metabolism, VERY SLOW, and I maintain at 1800 cals and I'm only 123lbs. So I am surprised. Maybe you need to reset your metabolism.

i doubt there is anything wrong with eating 800cals in the evening, esspeically when bulking! at the end of the day its the totals you want to be concerened with not when you are eating them, just as long as you are
i often won't get to the gym till late, sometimes i'll finish a workout at say 9:30-10:00, after that i'll have a whey and sugar shake, get back and have a cooked meal, then i will have another meal before i go to bed
i'll do this even when i'm cutting 'a doggs gots to eat!'
I agree... your body doesnt know what time of day it is... personally I eat quite a bit an hour or two before I sleep to fit in some cals for the day sometimes
Hey,
Yah, I'm around 115 lbs or so, so 2400 is what I'm starting at. I'll probably need to increase it more though, but just going to do it slowly so I don't put on so much fat. It's good to hear though that it doesn't matter to much about eating closer to bed. It'd be easier if I finished work earlier and could have supper earlier but unfortunately I don't think the boss will let me off early to go eat...haha. Just feels sorta weird because sometimes I finish supper and then an hour an a half later I'm eating again before I go to sleep.

Ok, sorry, I didn't know you were that little and femaleMost women here don't bulk which is why I assumed you were male. Again, my apologies.
2400 cals is a good place to start then. I would not worry about eating carbs at bedtime while you are bulking. However, 800 cals that late at night is a different story. There are 3 very important meals while bulking that most of your cals should come from. First meal of the day, Meal 1. Then your Pre workout. Have a shake PWO with 40G of carbs, preferbly oats and then a full meal 1 hour later. Those 3 meals, Meal 1, Pre and Full Meal 1 hour after shake should make up a the majority of your cals. Then your other meals should be smaller. I would concentrate on getting those meals bigger and reducing your other meals.

true that you body doesn't know what time it is but insulin sensitivity naturaly decreases at night. selecting very low GI carb sources or no carbs at night is optimum for fat loss...Originally Posted by ryuage

I have been bulking since August and I have been eating a lot of calories at night, even carbs and I have definitely been retaining bf more so than when I refrained from this sort of eating. If you are very concerned about retaining bf then I would set a time that works for you to cut back on carbs. (ie, 3pm/5pm/even 8pm) How much weight you want to gain and the list in which you put your priorities will make a difference. For example, I prefer to gain size before getting too caught up in retaining bf so in turn I eat quite a bit even at night. When bulking I like to think, rather eat a few too many calories than not enough. You can cut them back at any time you choose or change your diet the moment you feel it's not working out for you.![]()

so if I eat carbs before I sleep, then what?
you CAN eat carbs before bed, i eat a bowl of bran cereal w/ milk and a slice of toast before bed when i'm bulkingOriginally Posted by ryuage
LAN is saying that its better not to eat too many high GI carbs before bed as that will retain fat, so still eat carbs just make low-GI choices later on in the evening
e.g... a bananna at breakfast/lunch/post-wo is great, but before bed its not so great
The body does not convert significant amounts of carbs to fat, excluding certain unusual situations (very low fat diet, very high fructose/sucrose consumption, medical conditions, ...). The study at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...&dopt=Abstract found that when subjects ate a diet with a 50% caloric surplus of carbohydrates, less than 5g of fat per day was created via DNL (converting carbs to fat).
