    Question for the knowledgeable

    I have been a Type I diabetic for 21 years. I'm 28 years old now, in great health, blood sugars are in control, and no problems to speak of. I orginally started weight training to help keep control of my sugar levels, but would like to get more serious about it. I have been training hard for about 6 months and for about a year overall. I have been trying to do research as much possible and my doctor is fantastic. I see her every three months and will bring this question to her when I go for my next checkup. In the mean time I was wondering if any one knows if high levels of protein (i.e 1.5g per lb) are harmful to the kidneys in anyway? Right now I consume just under 1g, around .8g per lb, and have had no signs of anything being wrong in the kidney area. I would like to up my protein intake and was wondering if anyone here had any knowledge on the subject. Thanks for all your advice. Its really appreciated

    Of course opinions are all over the place on this question but in my opinion there has been enough research to show that unless you have a pre-existing kidney problem....the amount of protein you suggest should not be a problem at all.

    There is also the question of how much protein you can actually utilize vs how much is safe...i think people often confuse these arguments so be sure to bring that up to your Dr.

    Another point is that most doctors...and even nutritionists are unaware of the true bodybuilding lifestyle and needs of someone who trains heavily. It is not really something they deal with often enough to have good knowledge of the subject...in general (your Dr may be different, i am only making a general statement)

    I agree. Also, I train a Nephrologist (kidney specialist) so I talk to him pretty extensivly about this stuff. He says that unless you have a pre-existing problem you should be okay with a high level of protein intake. he said to just make sure you drink enough water through out the day to make sure your kidneys keep on working.

    I agree you should be fine - even the ACSM agrees that higher protein intake (1.2-1.6g per kilo BW) is fine for serious strength trainers.
