Should governements ban TRANS FAT ?

The canadian parliament just passed a resolution last night to ban trans fat from any product within the next year.Canada will be the second country to do so after denmark I belive . So all those oreos and chips , wont be allowed to have any trans fat in them ... What do you think about that ? Think the US governement or any other governement should do the same ?

I dont know if its in the right section , but since its nutrition I thought it might be.

it would be a great idea, but it would never happen in the US. that would wipe out around 30-40% of the food items in our supermarkets...

Well , Ive been in both countries lots of times , and we have the same products as you. Basically what our governement is doing , is passing a law that will make it illigal for companies to use trans fat in their products. They will be allowed to have the same products , but they will have to use another kind of fat .

you can't force people to eat healthy. most don't know what a trans fat is, nor do they care.

I like the idea, but I don't want to force my beliefs on other people. However, a lot of people don't realize they are ingesting trans fats, and probably think they are eating healthier because the food has less saturated fats.

I do believe that trans fats should be listed separately from unsaturated and saturated fats on all labels. That way, if people actually care about the ingredients in their food, then they will probably inquire as to what trans fats are if they don't already know.

    Ban them! Ban them all!

Lenny: Pfft, forget it, Homer. While it has been established that eggs contain cholesterol, it has not yet been proven conclusively that they actually raise the level of serum cholesterol in the human
    blood stream.

Being the Socialist Country we are. I think this is a necesarry direction unfortunately. With free Healthcare, they need to find was to cut costs. So by enforcing proper eating habits they should be able to do this. Also the reason you see smoking banned in 90% of the country.

I don't agree with restricting our rights but I understand the reasoning behind it. This will also be good for Canadian Manufacturers, as it will Limit the import of American Products with Transfats.

    So oh well.

Well , there was this report on tv last night with cookie makers that already took the no trans fat turn(cookies usually contain loads of trans fat). One of the big cookie companies in Canada. They now have 50% of their products trans fat free ... They put instead of trans fat , sunflower oil. New York fries already took that turn also. They said , sure we had to do some Research and Developpement to make sure the product with sunflower oil taste the same , had the same texture and had the same life expenticy than with trans fat. They also said it had some cost related to that R&D, but from what they have seen since the release of those products (2 years now) they quickly paid those fees off with the sales. And remember , a lot of US food companies now have both products 1 transfat and 1 trans fat free. I know for sure , that oreo is available in both .

I saw this study done by harvart U a few years back , that gave this conclusion about transfat. If trans fat were replaced with saturated fats (which is still not that good , but better than trans) there would be about 30000 to 100 000 less deaths results of less hearth attack. If you want to see that study , just surf the web , Im sure youll find it pretty quick.

Thats of course until someone wants a bigger piece of the trans fat pie and puts a bullet in my back...or maybe i'll just stick to my day job...

...grab me a copy of NCAA 05 while you are at it.

Tax payers in Canada are paying a fortune to keep some obese smoker on nothing but the best prescription drugs for ailments and illness that are directly related to their unhealthy lifestyles.

I think banning Trans fat is a good idea for Canada, like IainDaniel said we have socialized medicine. If Canadian's want socialized medicine to work they are going to have to make some sacrifices. Life shouldn't be too bad without Trans fat, I'm sure we'll get by.

    I second that.
