"Oh, I found this amazing new diet..."

".... that made me lose 5 pounds in a week. I had to eat only frutis for 2 days, then frutis and veg for 2 days, and then I could eat meat the last 3 days", said a good friend of mine the other day during dinner.

I was trying not to over-react and refused to sound anal, although I felt like getting up on my chair and choking her down, so I just said, I didn't think that was the right way to go about losing weight cuz, it's a stupid crash diet and it will slow her overall metabolic rate to say the least.

To which she said, yeah she knows it's not ideal but its a GREAT way to start, and at this point I of course lose all control...

    HELP ME!!!

I come across friends who say crap like this almost every day, and I end up sounding like an anal, know-it-all asshole. How do I resist? What do you guys do in these situations?

I just count to 10, smile and shake my head!
Just had a girlfriend who purchased one of those 6 second ab machines from an infomercial... I have no clue what it is or what it does as I don't watch tv and I didn't even bother asking, I've been through the whole weight loss issues with her 'til I am blue in the face, anyhow she bought it with the purpose of having a six pack by summer, meanwhile she's ramming a McDonald's burger and fries down her gullet as she's so excitedly telling me about her new investment, she probably eats more fast food in one month than I eat in an entire year!
Some people just want a miracle fix.

I hear people at the gym "supposedly working out" spout off worthless nutrition info all the time. I just keep my mouth shut and try not to roll my eyes....at least not in front of them.

Aggies, Jodi, it makes me wanna strangle them too, but it's so much easier to ignore it when it's casual acquaintances that say and do this shit. Like this guy I met recently who, when found out that I workout to gain muscle, told me that the way to do it is to eat meat first in the meal then 30 min later to eat carsb because, meat takes longer to digest?? I was like WTF, what kinda logic is that, and how's 30 min gap gonna help anyway...

Anyway, my point was, what to do when it's good friends who do this shit.

Britchick, I hear ya all the way. I have a friend whom Iv'e tried to teach about the basics of fat loss soooo many times, I feel like a spoilt record and she still calls me after lunch and dead-serious says she's watching her diet so she's declined chicken and rice for ONLY 2 slices of pizza cuz that's less fattening??

I mean I care for them , but really, I hate myself when I time and again tell them what they're doing is wrong, and honestly I do sound like an ass!! Maybe I shoudl just stop caring..?

I can't stand it when people are ignorant. It's just like watching someone perform an exercise with terrible form at the gym. I want to say something, but some people are really sensitive.

You know what? I gave up with "those" people. I just say, "Good for you, good luck with that. When you're ready to get serious let me know."

Seriously because they f*cking know it's the wrong way, but they just want the quick and easy and that's what they're gonna get. they don't want the long-winded explanation about the calorie restriction and water weight loss and all that. So screw 'em. Let them get all frustrated when they gain back 10 for the 5 they lost, and when they're serious they'll come around and ask a serious question.

And if that makes me sound like an anal, know-it-all asshole, then fine. I'm fine with that. I was one of "those" people before and I can relate to their desire for quick results, but until they don't see the big picture, they won't like what the "know-it-all assholes" have to say.

*And by "know-it-all" I am just being funny, cause shit... I don't know it all, at all yet. hahahaha!

Two simple questions: "How many times have you tried stuff like that before?" and follow that up with "How'd it work for you?". Because deep down inside they know that they are just being dumb and falling for the latest stupid idea and they have already yo-yoed about five times. I get questions like this all the time and my answer is always the same:

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HEALTHY EATING HABITS AND REGULAR EXERCISE. IF YOU MAKE IT A REGULAR PART OF YOUR LIFESTYLE YOU WILL LOOK BETTER, FEEL BETTER AND LOSE WEIGHT. PERIOD.
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.

I have come to a point where i consiously resist the urge of getting into such conversations. Coz if i do get into the conversation, i will then have to resist the stronger urge of choking the life out of that dumbass!! My sanity is more important to me than their stupid ideas.

Yeah, that's the point which I am at. I am at the brink of saying something, and have to tell myself to shut up. Otherwise I will be going on and on and on (plus the choking bit). One other point is that my body doesn't really reflect what my mind knows...but hopefully the path down that road is starting soon.

I can totally relate. I have friend who eats nothing all day and then pigs out late at night. She does an hour of cardio a day, but no weight training. Then she constantly complains to me that she can't lose weight and says "why can't I look like you?" I tried to give her advice, but she doesn't take it and keeps complaining. I've learned that you can give advice if its welcome, but if the person doesn't follow it, I back off and just privately shake my head after that. Its frustrating, I know.

yeah i have the same problem, but i certainly can't choke my own mom. LOL. She wants help but of course like most she wants the quick fix. Which I ignorantly did with the Atkins thing, but that was before I learned all i know now, but even then I was exercising a lot more, knowing that was the best addition for losing weight. But I tell her it would be easy to lose weight if she would cut out little things like MAYO on her sandwhiches and eating chips and candy. I said something the other day and she was like." OH its the Holidays, so its ok" . I just wanna know when christmas and thanksgiving became about eating junk food and giving someone the right to gain 15 of useless weight in two months time. I just dont get it.

hey everyone, thank you so much for posting, I feel much better not that I know there's so many of you out there who have to put a rein on your actual feelings lest there'd be lots of dumb dieters choked to death!

I think I can control this, I think I can be indifferent next time someone says such a dumbass thing in front of me. I really think there's no point arguing with these people in any way, cuz even if I said something like that poneyboy, they'd probably find excuses for their post diet failures, These peope are unbelievable, they just refuse to learn, cuz that would mean giving up hope on quick, miraculous results, .... I am just gonna look the other way from now on!

These whole thread started cuz a friend of ours said this thing ( that is in the name of the thread) to me the other day, and I said that she really shouldnt be doing that, that it's prolly water loss, that she's losing muscle, and lowering her basal metabloci rate and I said please, please don't do it again..... and then my BF said, I was insensitive, cuz this girl suffered to lose 5lbs and I underminded it, by saying she's doing a wrong thing and she'll put it back on... I wish I just kept my big mouth shut!! But form now on I will.

I know how you feel dalila I have so many friends like that.. I usually do what ponyboy does, I ask questions like that. I have friend that always talks about how carbs aren't bad, and I agree and say "yes, it's all a matter about what kinds of carbs". And she says "well I don't think white pasta and white bread is bad". I just go "well we all have different goals!" and smile

Yeah, but unfortunately the myth of spot reducing is greatly perpetuated by so many companies that want to sell their "revolutionary" ab workout in a box.

Yeah I love how people will say carbs are bad so they don't eat good breads, rices and potatoes but will POUR on the sugar loaded fat free dressing onto their grilled chicken salad. LOL

im RIGHT with you there man, it pisses me off more than anything
I have several friends who "know bodybuilding" as you say
but the rest of my school is full of morons...
My friend lost 20 lbs in like 3-4 wks and he thinks he's a genius for it or something
All he did was eat 2 sandwiches a day....i tell him to have 5 smalls meals a day and he thinks im crazy...
and EVERYONE tries to workout everyday, they may try to do chest 5 times a week...it pisses me off and i tell them....but it just doesnt matter
they would rather go off what the stupid middle school coaches first taught them when they began working out...

    and my mom....
sometimes ill be like, i got a headache or ill go to the bathroom often to piss
and she'll say, "its all that stuff your taking"

    edit:

    whats even worse though
is when i tell people the right way to lose weight...
they'll say, "then why are you fat" or " well you arent cut or anything"
They have no concept of bodybuilding, i just want to yell "HELLO, IVE BEEN BULKING FOR MONTHS, WHAT DO YOU THINK MY BELLY IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE!!!"
