    Question gaining muscle or fat

    Hello,

This is sorta a weird question but I've been wondering about it so I thought I'd ask anyway. I was just wondering what is the prime determinant on whether excess calories you eat turn to muscle or fat? like with the rise of obesity (it seems like everyone is getting fat these days....), those people eat more than they burn and are gaining fat weight, and most of them aren't complete sedentary people. So what is the main factor that ensures you gain muscle over fat?
    Thanks!

Lift weights and eat healthy foods that fuel your body.

You can't turn fat into muscle. Fat is fat and muscle is muscle. Those that eat more than they burn will get fatter especially if those calories are poor food choices that the body has no use for. Refined carbs and transfat are the biggest things that make people fat, well that and the lack of exercise.

if you have a calorie surplus and you work out, your body will take the surplus to build new muscle. if you eat excess calories and sit on your ass all day, your body has no need to build new muscle which = fat.

well, to a point. if you eat more calories then youre burning, you will gain fat. period. if you exercise too, this limit of the amount of calories you eat will be higher. just like jodi said, it's dependent on if the calories are calories that are useful for your body.

    keep your ratios locked...

i.e. 20% of cals from fats
    35% carbs
    45% protein

with this and a properly overloaded muscle. The body is sure to use the nutrience appropriately to repair the muscle. It will ONLY happen if the muscle has been introduced to an overload or when its glycomed stores have been depelted. Having out of proportion ratios may cause some things to happen and not others.

    Hope that helps.
