Which is better

OK so bottom line for fat loss = Burn more cals than you ingest. This means:

1. Eat less
2. Exercise more
3. A combination of the above

Now my question is:

Apart from the added health benefits of exercise (cardio), is one way of achieving fat loss better than the others? Keeping in mind that the goal is to retain as much LBM as possible.

Say for example a persons maintenance cals is 3000 per day. Options may be:

1. Eat less - Let's say they plan for 2500 cals per day thereby creating a 500 cal per day deficit.
2. Exercise more - Enough to burn the 500 cals so no change to diet.
3. Both - drop cals by 250 and burn 250 through exercise.

Now, which of these is more conducive to losing fat and retaining LBM or are they all exactly the same as long as you create the caloric deficit (and eat quality proteins and fats etc etc....)

What this means is that when we drop a ball and it falls to the ground, it wasn't the ball that moved (down to the ground), but the ground that moved (up to the ball)

3. Both

You need to create a caloric deficit using both options. The cardio will increase your metabolism but too much cardio will burn LBM so that's why its better to create a deficit using both diet and cardio.

Ive found that it varies from person to person. When Im cutting I never create a caloric defecit before cardio, I always cut back at night or in the mornings so I lose weight during noon strenuous activity(i.e. at school, working, etc.) That way I never seem to lose much LBM.
But Im sure Jodi will know more than me

Yeah, why do you think there are people out there that are skinny fat. Because they don't eat properly. If you diet is lacking in proper nutrients it will eat away at it's own LBM before going to fat.

Why? Is it because the body is designed to hang on to a certain amount of fat at all (most) cost?

From an energy standpoint, it costs more to have muscle than fat.

Your body only wants at much muscle at it absolutely needs, whereas it'll take all the fat it can get (for future energy use).

Your body would rather lose muscle than fat.

Which is what makes BB such a challenge right?

I mean if I let my body do what it does best from an evolutionary point of view I'd end up a scrawny dude with a big gut!

Yeah, more optimal. Eat fiber and drink more water, trust me it helps.
