Depends on how much she weighs, goals, height etc.
my girlfriend added up all of her calories for today and said that she ate 1142 the whole day! is this good? i would think that this would be way too little.
Depends on how much she weighs, goals, height etc.

she weighs 122, prolly 5'3 and hardly ever works out. i am so used to figuring things out for myself and my body weight, when i saw that she only consumed 1140 calories, it struck me as way too little. i need around 1850 to cut and that was just for her to maintain. so i thought that if she was cutting, that would put her under 1000 calories...
She shouldn't go below 1250 for cals.

so if she is eating around 1140, what should i tel her? should i try to get her to eat more or what?
Thats is under 10 calories a lb...well below cutting levels. I know many people who consume much less then that in a day...but you also need to look at it over the span of a week. Does she consume the same amount of calories every day? If she is not an active person what so ever she wont need as many calories to live day to day like us b/c she is not burning anything really.

she said that she eats like that normally so i assume thats how it would be for the whole week. she used to workout a lot, but we are in college and she is taking 18 hours so she doesnt have a lot of time. but she is gonna get into it again and i am coming up with the amount of calories and protein etc. that she will need to consume. i am using Jodi's thread to come up with these numbers. i came up with about 1450 calories for her to start off with in order to lose 8-10 pounds over about 6 weeks and then start bulking up afterward. let me know if this is correct.
I don't think she should go below 10 cals per pound a day. No matter if you sit on your ass all day or not because under that you are putting yourself in starvation mode. Only the obese are excluded from this 10 cals per pound.

That sounds like a decent cal range...roughly 12 cals a lb. Start her off with clean eating and some exercise and she should do wonders! Congrats on getting her into it again...I'll never have that luck with my girl...not that she needs it but I always try LOL.Originally Posted by liljojo4711

I don't know about getting her to loose 8 to 10 pounds... That will put her at about 112 pounds and that is getting very light for her height... Why not consider sitting her calories at, or just below, her maintainence and then work on re-composition first rather than just dropping her weight?
If she is used to living on under 1200 cals then you want to work on increasing her slowly to a 'maintainence' level that is appropriate for her lean mass (do you know her BF%?), activity level and bodytype.
At her height and weight, assuming she is pretty active and does not have a substantially high BF% then she may have a maintainence level of about 1800 cals but I would aim for about 1500 cals to start with.
Work from her current intake and aim to add about 100-150 cals a week for a few weeks till she hits ~1500-1600 and see how her body reacts.
As for macronutrient levels - well, is she endo? Ecto? How much cardio will she be doing? What does she do during the day? Is she active?
Protein is pretty standard - Make sure she gets a minimum of 125g of complete protein a day with anything up to about 180g being fine (1 to 1.5g per pound). Unless, once again, she has a substantial amount of BF, in which case you can stick to the lower values (less lean mass).
For her fats, I'd aim for between 35g and 50g (minimum of 0.3g per pound)... But her exact number will vary according to if she likes a higher carb diet or more of an isocalorific diet.
He said she hardly works out so my guess is she just wants to be skinny and has no desire to put on LBM.
That's why I suggested NO LESS than 10 cals per lb. I like the 1464 calories for her in the plan he made up.

I don't know, Im a male hardgainer and even I am only eating 9 times my bodyweight although im sorta doing it under pressure so 10 times would be my ideal for best fat loss/muscle loss ratio. I was initially doing only 8 but after losing weight/muscle a little too fast for what i was losing fat wise i figured i should bump my calories slight so now im at 9 times for my weight which Like i said isn't ideal 10 would be better and I AM an ecto so it should be less for endos. If i was really obese(im cutting down from originally 20 percent) I would definitely do 7 to 8 X the whole way which would have been around 1400 to 1500 calories a day.
that's over 2,000lbs of food/day for meOriginally Posted by Souped_up

If she doesn't work out, why would she bulk after a cut?
I believe her plans later on are to begin working out again...currently she is to busy to with school and all. Or so thats what I read. For now setting her calories and losing some weight is a good idea...as jodi said...then when she has the time try to add some LBM on.Originally Posted by jaim91

I don't understand why your eating so low though yourself if your trying to practice what you preach?

Oh. You a girl? Sorry I thought you were a guy from that avatar. Nice development.
When i started my cut at 1400 calories at 204 what was crazy was I was doing 45 minutes of cardio a day. I was doing over an hour of cardio a day of moderate cardio when I was eating 1500 calories. Now im at 1600 calories lower weight and metabolism due to the muscle loss and only doing an hour of fairly slow cardio. Seems to preserve muscle better of course. Im not used to cutting so ive been trying to find the perfect balance of losing fat FAST but not TOO fast.![]()
