    warning about FLAX OIL

Hey all, i have been a lurker on these boards for quite some time now....... and the main reason i am posting is because i came across some distrubing news about taking flax oil : here's the link
    <LI class=first>www.udoerasmus.com/articles/udo/flax_prostate.htm
I am worried about this because the vast majority of my omega 3's come from flaxseed oil.............. should i switch to taking fish oil?

I want my omega 3's from flax oil......... but is an increased likely hood of cancer really worth the risk? I am posting this because this came as a shock to me and i want others to know the risks that go along with taking flax oil.

It has been suggested that high levels of omega-6 fatty acids (and a poor balance of omega-3 to omega-6 FA) can increase the risk of prostate cancer...

Omega-3 fats (specifically EPA and DHA found in fish) on the other hand have been linked to reducing cancer risk...

But I think fish oils are a much better source of omega-3 fats than flax oil anyway. You usually get enough omega-6 FA in your diet (grains, meats, eggs etc) and it is usually the ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 that needs correcting, not just the amount of omega-3 in your diet.

If you are worried - swap.

Yeah, but fish oils have high levels of mercury in them, which lead to increased risk of spontaneous death...

Make sure to get some other healthy fat sources like safflower oil, olive oil, nuts, etc. Omega-3 fatty acids aren't the only type of fat we need. However, the average diet is nearly devoid of this type of fat, which is why many supplement to increase their intake. This article (Although I admit I just skimmed it) appears to be talking about the imbalance of various fatty acids in one's diet.

As well, if you take a lot of omega-3 fatty acid supplements, I highily suggest taking an anti-oxidant supplement. I currently take a multivitamin/mineral, time release vitamin C, and additional vitamin E. Omega-3 fatty acids are highly oxidative. Oxidation can, in turn, cause free radicals, which have been linked to cancer. Anti-oxidant supplements can help to eliminate this effect.

I researched this a month or so ago when my mom sent me some articles about flax oil and prostate cancer.

My conclusion was that there is evidence of an issue so why not get my fat from fish oil. So, that's what I did.

Is it true mixing cottage cheese and flax oil prevents females from breast cancer?

Once again, as in males, omega-3 fats are linked to cancer reduction, and it is likely that the omega-3 fats in this oil (in this case it is the ALA) that would be protective. There is nothing especially special about that combination.

And yes, you would be better with some fish oil capsules than the flax.

Flax oil is a problem if it gets rancid--don't heat it, store it in the fridge, the bottle it comes in should be dense dark colored plastic, it should be stored in the fridge at the store, not on the shelf. Beyond that, moderation is key to everything. Alternate days with flax oil and fish oil, if you eat salmon then don't bother with either supplement. Take an anti-oxidant daily. This is according to a very much respected nutrition professor of mine and I happily follow his advice...but then again, I don't have a prostate. Oh, a good way to tell if your fish oil capsules are quality or not....if you burp up fish throughout the day (and you've taken it with food), its not good.
