    Fat to Fat

Ok, I have a question for all you biology people. I understand why a excess of carbohydrates get stored in fat after your body uses enough for function and glycogen stores. Everything that I have read says no matter what a caloric excess will lead to fat gain. So lets say for example, hypotheticaly, other health risks aside, that some was on an Atkins type diet where their carbs were under 20 or 30 grams a day. So they are consuming massive amounts of protein, and especially fats. It seems that people on this diet are not storing fat as fat even though they are in a large caloric excess. Im actually trying to find out some more about the nature of metabolism of fat, and how much your body actually uses in a given time period, and what happens to the excess. I certainly don't believe Atkins is a healthy diet plan, but I have seen some people drop very large quantities of fat over the course of a few months and have been wondering how it is working.

The weight drops because they are in a caloric deficit. The thing about the Atkins diet is that it does allow you to eat more calories. This is a result of the thermic effect of food. Protein has the highest thermic effect of all types of food, which means it takes more energy for your body to convert protein to glucose (gluconeogenesis). Those on the Atkins diet are obviously replacing many of the carbohydrates that they consume with protein. This, in turn, raises the number of calories your body uses in a day.

Also, Atkins style meals cause one to become full easily. You feel like you're eating a lot, but the number of calories you get from the meal are still fewer.

You cannot lose weight without being in a hypocaloric state. Period.
