    Oats question

I love oats (the old fashioned kind) and I usually eat oatmeal at least twice per day. I see you guys talking about mixing oats with yams, protein shakes, etc.

My question is - do you have to cook the oats first or do you just dump them in there?

I cook mine, I tried putting some dry in my late afternoon shake hoping they would absorb some liquid while it stood in the fridge at work, but when time came to drink it they were still a little hard and I had to chew them a bit before I swallowed.

I always just stick them in there. It's really gritty, and you have to do this weird hybrid of chewing and drinking to get it down, but it's fast.

If I'm gonna spend the time to actually cook them, I'll just eat them that way.

For the most part, I do what most of the people here have said - just dump them in the shaker bottle with the protein and liquid (water/milk/juice -- i use water) and chew/drink.

Some folks mix up the protein powder in liquid and then pour it in a bowl or tupperware and eat it like milk and cereal (it's easier to have it this way since you can use a spoon!).

And if you have the time to make your shake before you go to the gym, just throw it all in the blender, and let it grind up the dry oats into your shake. I like this best, but I don't always have the time to do it.

I stopped using the blender because I felt like too much of the oats and whey was being left on the sides of the container.

I just throw some raw oats and a scoop of whey into a shaker bottle and down it.(With water) Quick and easy.

Yea, couldn't you use a food processor? That sound like a good idea.

    Thanks for all the ideas!

Emma, I use Quaker Old Fashioned Oats. I have no idea what kind of oats they really are (even after reading your links)..lol. I know they taste great and I could live on them alone.

If the oats are flat and oval in shape then they are likely wholegrain ROLLED oats - which means they are pre-steamed and you don't need to cook them.

If it looks similar to rice (or if they look similar to rice cut into bits) then they are whole or scotch oats they they need cooking.

Yeah mang, I usually eat organic whole grain oats. They seem to taste better than the pesteside laden quaker oats stuff.

erm... so pouring oats in your shake and downing them in a matter of seconds is more hassle than... getting out a bowl, a spoon, oats into the bowl, add water/milk, stir, put in microwave, heat for 2 mins, take out and stir, let cool for 1 min, then spend 10 mins getting the shit down ya? then you gotta wash up that bowl and spoon afterwards which is a nightmare with oats stuck all over it

the whole reason i add my oats into my whey shake is because its hassle free!

also personally oats taste a lot nicer in a choc milkshake then they do microwaved in water, so why go through the hassle of cooking them and eating them seperately? its just wasted effort!

Yep.. I been cooking my oats three times a day. It's a real pain in the ass, especially cleaning up the dishes. I'm gonna start dumping them right in my shakes and eating them raw.

Emma, my oats are flat and oval. I guess they are whole grain rolled.

Where would you go to buy organic oats? I think Quaker oats are pretty healthy, so I'm not real worried about it. There are plently of things worse then worrying about maybe if your oats have pesticide.. I haven't heard of anyone keeling over from eating oats.
