is there a certain amount I sould be eating? - a lot, I know, but how much? How can I tell? if I am gaining fat, does that tell me? Do I just have to check the scale everyday? how quickly should I be gaining weight? I mean, is there a certain amout of pounds per month that I can go by?
Start around your maintenance intake. If you haven't a clue try Calories = 15x bodyweight in pounds. Increase as needed until the scale starts moving up. Check scale at least weekly. Shoot or for about a lb or so a week or thereabouts.
Don't just measure your gut to see if you are getting fat. Measure other bodyparts as well so that you can judge if you are gaining size where you want. The mirror as well is an excellent guide. Unless you have one with weird magnifying capabilities, it doesn't lie so easily.
Trial and error is the only way. Determine how many calories you are eating for maintenance. That is, how many calories can you eat and not gain any weight? Take this number, and increase or decrease it by 5-10% depending on whether you are trying to cut or bulk.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...
