Are Eggs safe?

I know I should be using the search feature but that doesnt open up discussion and it doesnt bring in new people so Im just going to ask it here.

Are raw eggs safe to eat? My mom says im sure to get salmonella or some other strange disease and die. Is she right?

PS: If it IS safe to eat how many do you eat and do you leave the yolk in?

Many people who eat raw eggs are not aware that eggs are essentially useless raw. The amino acids in eggs need to be heated to fully bond. Albumen in the urine is a general sign, as studies show that a significantly higher amount of malabsorbed protein (egg) was found in the urine of healthy individuals (1). Stable isotope techniques are used to determine the digestibility of raw eggs vs. cooked eggs. In another study, using this method, it was demonstrated that the assimilation of cooked egg protein is efficient, albeit incomplete, and that the true ileal digestibility of egg protein is significantly enhanced by heat-pretreatment (2). Heat-pretreatment of course being cooked.

If your getting nutritional info from fictional action movies then salmonella isnt your biggest problem.

Well its not just from Rocky. I thought body builders ate raw aeggs because it was a good source of protein.

PS: I just bought a chicken the other day and I chase it around right after my workout routine.

When you need someone to kick your ass like Apollo did in Rocky 1....give me a call, I'll help ya out with that.

My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

When one door closes another door opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the ones which open for us.

I agree with your philosophy on starting a discussion. For every question asked here lots of veterans on this board say do a search, but this is a message board not a sanctioned fitness library.

The whole point of a message board is to have discussions and as you mentioned bring in new people to the discussion.

It is up to you as to if you think the pro's outweigh the cons for eating raw eggs.

So you can eat raw eggs if you want - But to me:

The Cons:
There is a risk of disease (eg: salmonella)
You are wasting half the protein from them (digestability only ~60%)
You are also getting substances that block the absorption of nutrients (biotin)

The Pros:
Ummmm.....
More time efficient (don't have to cook them)
You get to look like Rocky....???
