oats are just a generally good food for any diet, bulking cutting anything. Its very heart friendly and provides good energy and fiber. You should definitely incorporate them into your diet.

Oats are a good carbohydrate source that you can use regardless of if you are adding mass or cutting.

People eat them for a variety of reasons but mostly because they are cheap, easy to use (can eat them hot/cold and are easily portable), have a good amount of fibre (both soluble and insoluble), they are medium to low(ish) in glycaemic index (keep you full), have a respectable protein content (~10-12g per 100g) and are healthy for you (decrease cholesterol and BP).

But, most importantly - They are also damn tasty!

I liquidfy my oats in the blender and put it in my whey protein shake for the first time to see if i could gulp it down. After halfway through, i thought i was going to puke. I didn't try it again for a week but i know i need to eat them. It's so hard to swallow because it felt like i was swallowing rocks.

How should i eat them/prepare them however you guys do it?

what i do is toss the oats in a blender, and add enough water to cover them, maybe a little more, then toss it in the fridge and go workout. When i come back the oats have softened up and absorbed some of the water, then I add in my banana and my whey, then blend it up with some ice cubes... comes out great every time, i literally lick the inside of the blender clean sometimes

so you just put the oats in a blender (not grinding them or anything) add water and then put it in the fridge? May i ask why you blend it up with ice cubes as well? Wouldnt the water/oats in the blender freeze after you get home from your workout?

Should i try this and will it be easy to drink because i have trouble swallowing oats without being close to puking. (read my post above)

I usually cook mine (usually with a mix of oatbran and scotch oats) and then top with some cinnamon and cottage cheese!

But oaties are GREAT by themselves - hot or cold!!

If you need some other flavours then, to use another post I made about what you can do, the possibilities are:

Cinnamon (great for your blood insulin levels too!)
Vanilla extract (stronger than vanilla essense)
    1% Cottage cheese
Berries/fruits (esp. berries - they are full of anti-oxidants, fibre, vitamins, minerals)
Fat-free natural yoghurts (or - if you get flavoured, use sugar-free)
    Protein powders
Stevia (if you want it sweeter)
    Nut butters (Sooooo gooooddd....)
    Sugar Free jams
    Sugar Free syrups
    Linseed meal or other nuts/seeds
    Dried Fruits
    Fruit Juice

Just combine them with the oats in what ever taste you desire (or what ever your diet allows)!

eg: A GREAT, non-strict-diet treat is Bircher museli... For this, simply combine the following in a good tupperware container -

2 c of Oats, Rolled Barley, Rolled Rye (a mix of all three)
375 ml of 100% fruit juice (pear or apple or pear and apple go well)
1/2 c chopped dried fruit (apple, pear, apricot, figs, muscatels) - if you want
1/2 c chopped seeds/nuts (linseeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts) - if you want

Give it a good mix. You can add a little water if you want as well (to increase the moisture) then leave it in the fridge overnight to soak. In the morning, spoon out your desired amount and top with fresh fruit, natural FF yoghurt and cottage cheese.

In winter, you can also heat it slightly, before adding some warm skim milk, some unsweetened stewed fruits and some cottage cheese!

Alternatively, if you are more 'strict' then use water and some lemon juice to soak an oats/linseed meal mix in (and leave out the dried fruits) then in the morning top with some cottage cheese and cinnamon!

You can then get really creative and soak the oats in all sorts of spice mixes -eg: some lemon juice, cardimon, vanilla, star anise and cinnamon soaked overnight and then heated in the morning makes a really warming winter treat!

Oh - and one of my personal favourite combinations when I am in the mood for a treat:
Oats + SF maple syrup + 1% CC + chocolate PP + natty PB

Mmmm.... chocolate peanut butter fudgey goodness!!

Ice REALLY thickens up shakes - it makes them froathy and damn tasty (like slushies!!).

I think Jeepster adds only water before he leaves and them puts this in the fridge to softens the oats. Then, when he gets home, he adds the ice and blends - so it thickens up.

Should i try this and will it be easy to drink because i have trouble swallowing oats without being close to puking. (read my post above)
The oats are completely blended into the shake and so you do not even notice them. Esp if you add flavours/other things such as fruit, vanilla essense and cinnamon.

yeah just put them in the blender, then the fridge/not freezer, and yeah, it will be much easier to digest them when they are softened by the water.

hey emma, have you ever tried xanthan or guar gum in your shakes... just a 1/4 tsp or so right before you blend them and they come out extra thick, just like a milkshake. I highly recommend this stuff. I get it from bobs red mill.

Yeah - I have... Makes them really thick (if you add enough it is almost to the point of having to eat it with a spoon!)... You can also use it to make pudding type treats that you can stick in the fridge!!

I would not probably not put it in a PWO shake though - being a fibre you don't want to go adding it to this meal!!
