Basic Training Diet

I'm heading to Army Basic Training in a few weeks. I've changed my training a lot since I decided to go. I've been doing a lot more cardio than weights, trying to get my run times down. Abs have been getting more attention than usual, and I've been doing a ton of pushups.

I feel pretty confident about where I'm at heading in, the interesting part will be when I get there. I'm not going to have a lot of options as food choice, and I have a feeling I'll be hungry enough to eat whatever they put in front of me, and probably all of it. I'm imagining that the army has taken into consideration the meals and how many calories everyone will be burning (probably an insane amount). Should I be trying to eat everything I possibly can to really benefit from the workouts? or should I be trying to eat any specific foodgroups more than others (if I have the choice)? As of now I'd pretty much try to eat a normal balanced diet with about as much protein as I can get my hands on.

Anyone else have a similar experience? advice?

I would eat everything, or you'll be hungry if you don't. At least I ate everything...but then again, when I went in I was 5'11" 115 lbs. When I came out, I was 140 lbs...still lean.

I was also a lot younger. But I think it will always be dependent on the body type you have...if you're fat right now...maybe you can pick what you want to eat...but if your average or skinny...I'm sure you will burn the calories during boot camp...

I'm 6' and 168 or so. I'm fairly lean, I'm just trying to max out my benefits from all the workouts while I'm there.

Just eat everything you can get your hands on. You will be running your ass off from the time you get up til you go to sleep. Also, you will only eat 3 times a day, so if you're used to eating frequent small meals, say good bye to that. And they will usually not be all that great. If you're in the field, you get crap. If you're in the mess hall, you usually have pretty decent choices.

Where will you be for basic training?

To an extent they think about your meals, but you are gonna be doing other things that will be exhausting aside from just PT. I am in Air Force ROTC and when I went to Field Training (yea yea, it's not basic training, but still intense to some extent) I would eat big and eat it all. I hated being hungry so when it was b'fast, lunch, dinner, I ate it all. Also for when doing FTX's (Field Training Exercise) you will probably be given MRE's. Technically ONE of those could last you a day if necessary, but they'll never feed you only once a day. My roommate is Army and he went through basic training, he said you eat when you can and what you can...because not only the PT but all the marching, jogging and excess overload on your body (physically and mentally) really requires lots of energy.

You gotta step up, otherwise you'll get stepped on.

Good luck. Ft Benning sucks. I went to basic at Ft Jackson in SC, and it was really nice there. Then I went to Ft Benning and I hated it. Only good thing was that I was 4 hrs from home, which is where I went almost every weekend. Are you going to jump school too?

You'll eat whatever they slop on your tray and you'll eat it fast. If your smart you'll drink plenty of water too.
