You would be better off with fish oilAre you getting any other efa's?
Whats up everyone. I've been trying to add more fat into my diet lately, and I've been supplementing with 1tbls. of Olive Oil a day but i want to get more omega 3's in my diet. I'm going to get some flax oil, not the capsules, and I was wondering if there are anything's I can look for on the label to help me pick a good one. I know that cold pressed is best. The stuff I'm thinking of getting is Vitamin World's brand. it has 2.72g Alpha-Linolenic Acid, 698mg Linolic, and 814 Oleic, per 1tsp. I was going to get the Health From the Sun liquid from DPS but this stuff is about the same price without shipping from DPS. Sorry if this is an obvious answer i just don't konw but about oils.

Ok, here is the deal with Flax vs. Fish oil in a nutshell. E.F.A's (essential fatty acids) are just that: essential. You can more than likely get the needed EFA's that flax gives you from a good balanced diet but in your not likely at all to get the EFA's that fishoil gives you from your diet. You need a good balance of the Omega's that are in both of these EFA's and to do that you need MORE fishoil and probably NO flax.
Im no expert on this by any means and dont claim to be.....I had the same question about flax awhile back and after alot of advice and extensive research ( no kidding) the above is what I came up with.
Bigger and Stronger and Leaner and Meaner!
Yes, flax oil provides other EFA's besides omega 3's but more than likely we can accomplish this with our diet.
The purpose behind the Fish oil is to 1. get a sufficient amount of EPA/DHA. 2. If helps mobolize fat, 3. A TON of other health benefits
Here is a little article I did on fish oil in our newsletter: http://www.ironmagazine.com/newslett...05/#dietcorner you may have to scroll down to find it but it's there.

yeah i don't take any other efa's. I get what ever i get in my diet and by what reading I've done that's probably mostly omega 6's. I eat salmon every now and then and tilapia quite often but there really isn't a whole lot of fat in talapia anyways. I just figured i needed more 3's so i was going to take flax since it has a good bit of 3's and some 6's. I dont really get a lot of fat in my diet in general and i want a liquid so I can add it to my food I'm eating instead of capsules.
Sure but flax oil has a very small conversion to EPA/DHA which is the primary benefit in omega 3's so your diet is still going to lack in omega 3's.

I haven't tried flax oil yet, but I use fish oils (6-12), natural peanut butter (2 tbsp/day), olive oil (1+ tbsp/day) and egg yolk (1-2/day) for my fats. I throw 1 tbsp of peanut butter with my morning oatmeal and eat another tbsp at night with my bedtime meal; good stuff!
Also want to add, I hear flax oil is pretty expensive relative to other good fat sources. Fish oils run me less than $7 for 300 caps at Sam's Club and Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter is $2-something for a one-pound jar, which at 2 tbsp/day would last you 2 weeks. My advice, I'd definately throw in fish oils, as in addition to being cheap, they provide many other benefits (read Jodi's article or run a search).
aight cool, thanks guys and gals. Guess i need to get my ass to Sam's this weekend get some fish oil caps.
