    A 900 Calorie Diet??

    hey guys,
    got a question:

when on a heavy cutting diet and leading an active lifestyle how many cals below maintenance should someone be shooting for??
active lifestyle plus a 4 mile run and 30 minute gym workout 5 days a week. shooting for 300-500 below maintenance but with the working out im burning at least 500-600 so should i stick at maintenance or still drop below maintenance?
    ????

actually im training him and he wont let go of these concepts 1. no carb low carb dieting 2) no food in leads to weight loss.
ive explained if hes dropping weight a lot with a 900 caloric intake hes not neccessarily losing body fat but also muscl mass (plus the stress on organs and the coming headaches and lethargy). he doesnt understand the concept that without calories to fule his body his workouts and runs go to shit causing less to no calorie burn, for example toady our run he was just doggin it tired lethargic weak etc... got good sleep but he only took in 900 cals yesterday. he know im certified through two agencies and have trained for 10 years but i think because its coming from his buddy hes reluctant. i was looking for other opinions to trya nd wake him up.he also did a no carb diet in the past and lost 25 pounds (but as i pointed out to him he gained it all back plus 10lb 2 months after he went off of it?
    soooo
thanks for the reply much appreciated.

It is usual to start any good cutting program at ~10% below maintainence calories and decrease as necessary to maintain weight loss at a healthy rate. Once you hit a certain % below maintainence (usually ~20-30%) then, if your weight loss stalls, it is better to start to implement a carb rotation or calorie cycling program rather than decrease intake further (so to avoid total metabolic melt down).

But I will also say that it is NOT usual to start with so much cardio as well (usually start with 2-3 days and work up slowly). This is so you have 'tools' left in the bank when you DO stall - which means you don't have to resort to dropping calories too low.
