    dairy - good or bad?

i think i remember reading somewhere that dairy products should be avoided (for reasons i can't remember!), and i also recall hearing that dairy products increase fat storage especially abdominal fat

any truth in this? or is it a load of BS?

are yoghurts, skim-milk and low fat cheese okay sources of cals if bulking? or should one seek to minimise cals from dairy regardless of bulking or cutting

    thanks

Nope. No truth at all... It is your typical "BB-myth perpetuating" load of bull. (just like the other myths such as the "don't eat carbs after 3pm" myth, the "don't eat 3 hrs before bed" myth, the "don't eat fruit" myth and the "don't eat fats and carbs in the same meal" myth).

Dairy doesn't need to be avoided unless you have some medical (or taste) reasons why you can't/don't want to eat it... Or unless you are a few weeks out from competition and you have issues with it (it can cause some people to hold water and have 'thicker skin' - thus preventing you from completely drying out).

It has acutally been linked with DECREASED fat mas, increased lean mass and better body composition. There are some really good reads here:

Mechanisms of Dairy Modulation of Adiposity

Role of calcium and dairy products in energy partitioning and weight management

Role of dietary calcium and dairy products in modulating adiposity.

    Here:
Dietary Proteins in the Regulation of Food Intake and Body Weight in Humans

    and here:
Manufacture and Use of Dairy Protein Fractions

are yoghurts, skim-milk and low fat cheese okay sources of cals if bulking? or should one seek to minimise cals from dairy regardless of bulking or cutting
In my opinion FF/SF yoghurt, skim milk, cottage cheese and low fat hard cheese is perfectly acceptable - ESPECIALLY when bulking! Milk/dairy is highly anabolic, highly anti-catabolic and an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, carbs and protein.

Don't drink it if you don't like it - but don't just avoid it because some other guy said too...

If I am not dieting I enjoy having some dairy. I like Cottage Cheese and cheese with my eggs in the AM.

and i wont bother mentioning the amount of milk I consume when I eat an entire box of fruity pebbles.

Agree........Dairy is good for those not on a competition diet or in the last stages of a cut.

what most dont know is that after the age of 2 we lack the enzyme neccessary to fully digest milk. so much of the nutrients are wasted. cottage chesse and other such things have been acted on by an enzyme already so they can be fully digested.

I have read that many times but never found any good scientific evidence proving it. Personally, I despise the taste of milk and stick with cheeses and yogurt.

The thing with dairy is that the carbs in it usually get stored as fat because the body uses other sources of carbs before it will use them. Dont worry unless you are losing weight.

The lactose (carbs) does not make you store fat. Your body doesn't magically look at lactose and say hey, I can't use that for energy so I'll convert it to fat.

Lactose is half glucose half galactose. Glucose and galactose both get converted to glyocogen and stored as muscle and blood glycogen to be used for energy. As with any other carb, if you eat too much you spill over and if you spill over then the glucose gets converted to fats instead.

BTW dairy is a complete protein.

For many reasons, bodybuilders I have known have an ongoing 'hate affair' with dairy products, believing they ruin conditioning and add bodyfat. For the most part, even pany pros I have spoken too skimp on cheese, yogurt and milk. However, these foods are all a great source of protein in that it provides all the amino acids needed for growth. Also, unlike other sources of protein, dairy-based products raise levels of a hormone called calcitriol, whihc may increase the metabolic rate in dieters. Healthy amounts need to be consumed to get benefits though.

Dair products also yeilds a slow digesting proetin call casein. (It provides a slower and more sustained release of amino acids than whey). Casein is a great choice of protein for dieters who are after a protein with as few calories as possible. Casein-rich products (such as cottage cheese) are often low in fat and low in carbs. I remember a time back when Milos Sarcev told me that research has shown that casein helps people on low calorie diets maintain muscle mass. (Muscle retention helps keep your metablic rate elevated which allows the body to burn a maximum amount of bodyfat.

    Don't shy away from dairy.

    Good day.

Well, I was put on a diet 4 years ago that restricted all dairy and without my daily fat free yogurt dose, I got horrible cases of yeast infection. Once I was off the diet (it was a weight loss clinic diet, and it worked, but it was HORRIBLE I lost almost all my lean mass) the infections went away. Also, dairy is good for men to reduce kidney stones (I live in the kidney stone belt of America too). Since I tried the 3 servings a day thing, my waist HAS gotten smaller (now if I could only find something for my butt).

On a side note, the only way I kept off the 40 pounds I lost through starvation at that WL clinic was exercise - cardio and BB. If you don't do dairy, you need some kind of pro-biotic supplement and calcium from other sources.

where do you get your information? i got mine from the teacher of my physiology and pathology 2 class, she is an older woman with a PhD, who practiced western medicine for a few decades before deciding to learn more about holistic healing and health and eastern medicine. ask this lady anything about the human body, physiology, diseases, current medical research, past medical research, and she is probably gonna know it. medicine is her life.
youll have to excuse me if i take her information over yours in this case. unless you have the degrees, lifelong dedication and about 40 yrs of practice to back it up.
