    Diet Soda

I saw in some posts it's ok to have one or two a day, but my question is why only 1 or 2 if some diet sodas do not have any (calories, carbs, or sugar). I just wanted to know why it would be bad to drink alot of soda other then it will rot your teeth.

Well... It will not rot your teeth (false sugar = not teeth rotting )...

But the false sugar is the main reason why people limit their intake of diet soda... The carbonation is also another reason why people may limit intake there is some suggestion that carbonated water can decrease bone mass)... and for people who are cutting diet soda can also make you bloat.

All sugar substitutes can not be processed by the body. It doesn't know what to do with it. They are also liver toxic. Aspartme and such are not good for you.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard that aspartame changes into formaldehyde in your body. So low constant levels (such as drinking diet sodas daily) of it is bad for you.

It decomposes into Methanol which is a component in formaldehyde.

What about the new generation of diet sodas that use Splenda (sucralose) instead of Nutrasweet (aspartame)? I've read up on Splenda and have not found any negative studies.

Actually, the only negative site I've found about Splenda is http://www.thetruthaboutsplenda.com. After sorting through all the hyperbole, the site boiled down to "There are no long-term studies, so it must be bad for you". Splenda was created back in 1991 and has been in use almost as long.

On a completely unrelated note, the Sugar Association of America has a website at http://www.thetruthaboutsplenda.com.

Regarding the lowering of bone density by carbonic acid, nearly every study I've read or doctor I've talked to says that this is a repeatable fact. But with all the supplements that athletes take (especially calcium/magnesium) I wonder if this is really a problem for this subset of the population.
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.

I know that people have strong opinions on this topic but honestly, if aspartame changes into formaldehyde in the body, don't you think that there would be people dying from drinking too much of it, especially since it has been out so long? Read the data and make your own decision, but I personally drink tons of diet soda and have no "guilty feelings" about it. Who knows, maybe I'll regret it in 30 years...but I sincerely doubt it.

I tend to agree--I always think it's funny though when I'm at the grocery store and see incredibly overweight people with three cases of Diet Coke, obviously you might want to consider cutting your calories elsewhere as well!

I still would like to know how it turns into formaldehyde...

Hi Everyone, onoe of my first time posting here but been lurking for quite some time. I wanted to chime in on this since I have done many searches on various boards on diet soda. However no one seems to mention Hansens's Diet soda as a better alternative. They use splenda, but there are no preservatives, no caffeine and no sodium. The flavors are limited (Black cherry, Ginger, Creamy Root Bear, Tangerine lime, Kiwi Strawberry, Peach and I think thats it), but are labeled as using natural flavors and extracts.
I will say they are sweet and usually a few sips will help control the cravings if you use diet soda for that reason.

yeah, reelbigfish, ive been preaching the hansens for a while now

you can find them at most natural foods stores as there regular sodas are all natural. Of course the diet sodas arent (due to the splenda), but alot of the stores still carry them anyways.

yep, the gingerale is great, the root beer is a little weak though. The rest are pretty solid also. They even dont add in coloring. Pretty weird when your pouring a black cherry soda into a glass and its clear
