    Protein Shakes

Can anyone suggest ways to make protein shakes without carbohydrates because as of now I consume a ridiculous amount of calories from carbs due to adding orange juice and bananas to my shake? Any suggestions?

when i get ready for a show i have 2 scoops of Nitro Tech, 1 cup of water, and 4 egg whits. Hardly any carbs in it. You can also switch the water to skim milk to make it taste better.

I've been trying a diet from Beverly Int. posted by w8.The shakes are made w/ non-sugar protein powder, heavy whipping cream or flax seed oil, water. These don't taste bad depending on your choice of powders.I put natural peanut butter in at times w/ vanilla or chocolate powder & it tastes really good.
Look for w8's post in Diet & Nutrition, sorry I can't remember the name of it.

Yeah, the protein powder i use is free from sugar. The whipping cream doesn't sound like a bad idea. Would you use this in place of or with flax seed oil. Also, what is this vanilla or chocolate powder you speak of?

Just get protein with little or no carbs. Add some egg whites into the mix and gives it a nice texture and taste.

You would use 3 tbsp of heavy whipping cream OR 1 tbsp flax seed oil. If you add 4 strawberries (negligible carbs, has fibre, low GI) it tastes even better!

If I were to use the heavy whipping cream in place of flax oil, does whipping cream provide the omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that flax oil does? Does it provide the nutrients flax does?

Chocolate/vanilla powder refers to the flavor of the protein powder. As far as using both heavy cream & flax seed oil, w8 said I should use one or the other. You should really try to find her post in DIET & NUTRITION it will answer alot of your questions. You could also check on-line diaries under---my road to kickiing a$$ look at the eating schedule.

You can find the thread in the fat loss tips sticky.

No, the cream does not have the EFA's the flax does.

If your adding the orange juice and bananas for taste why don't you try a different brand of supplement? There are a few different protein supplements that taste pretty good. Optimum Whey double rich chocolate in skim milk is not bad.

Maybe you should by some different brands in smaller portions and see if you can find something you like.

I would use the flavored shakes, but I have a pretty big problem with consuming the artificial sweeteners that a majority of the companies use to lower the amount of carbs.

You may just have to work at making sure you have enough clean food on hand.

I used to add a banana to my protein shake, but now, all I do is make my shake the night before. The consistancy of the shake is nice and thick. Now, I dont add anything.

The protein powder I have is unflavored and contains no sweeteners of any kind. There are several unsweetened protein powders on the market. That is why I use bananas and orange juice to sweeten it. However, three or four shakes a day seems like it would add up to a whole lot of sugar. I also choose not to consume artificial sweeteners out of a personal preference due to the fact that they are unhealthy from what I have read.

If no sweeteners is your choice then you'll just have to hold your breath and choke it down quick. It's been suggetsted that 3-4 shakes isn't such a good idea and that you should try to get more real food instead.I've cut down to 2 & I just have to plan ahead better so that I'll have enough clean food & don't reach for junk.

That makes sense that it would be a better idea to get more clean food than just down shakes all day. The major problem with that for me is that I am attempting a high-protein but fairly vegan diet as I have read enough about meat to scare me away from it. I still receive probably between 30-50 grams of protein from beans, legumes, bread, etc. but without shakes it is difficult to receive sufficient protein. Hopefully several shakes a day isn't detrimental. I think I am going to try a shake with whipped cream and strawberries though as that sounds pretty good. Any advice or comments are appreciated.

As it is probably evidenced by several of my posts, the one thing I take more seriously than weightlifting is my diet, removing as many carcinogens as possible, and eating as naturally as possible. I choose not to eat meat because I feel that cooking meat is unnatural and that it causes carcinogens. Just thought I'd put that out there to allow anyone providing advice to take that into consideration.

You can get a book----FOOD COMBINING MADE EASY. I saw it at GNC & it was only $2.50.It will show you how to put together 2 or 3 veggie proteins to make a complete protein that your body can use more efficiently. There are probably many other books on this subject.
You can always go "caveman" & eat your steak raw, some people do.GOOD LUCK!!!

I third the real food idea. But when you want low-carb shakes there are some good ones out there. For example, Isopure had no fat or carbs. Lean Body packets are pretty low and PureProtein have almost none.

Obviously the less fat and the less carbs the worse they are going to taste.

I was thinking about it and I realized that eggs don't bother me as much. Would eating egg-whites (as I HATE the yolk) throughout the day be a good idea to receive protein and "real food"?

Egg whites are great. When I get tired of them, I use egg beaters, which are basically egg whites with a kick. You can eat them hard boiled or scramble them and add chicken or other lean protein for an added boost.
