    eating right in college

OK, im going to be moving in to college this sunday and i need some ideas to maintain a somewhat healthy diet. i know im going to be stuck eating some meals from our dining hall, which im going to have to bite the bullet. my dorm only contains a microwave.

    proteins:

    tuna
    eggs
    chicken(canned and cafeteria served)
    protein powder
    cottage cheese if im lucky
    milk

    carbs:

    oatmeal
    brown rice
    apples
    oranges
"whole wheat bread"-its more like brown bread in the cafeteria..probably high
    GI..

maybe i can do some canned beans..chickpeas or red kidney

    need some more carb ideas..

can red lentils be cooked in the micro and still come out all soupy and good?

    fats

    eggs
    fish caps
    flax seed oil
    cashews
    PB-prob wont be natural
    almonds

and ill have salads from the cafeteria for my veggies

not the best but eh, got to make the best out of situation. when i cut in a couple months its gonna be hell.

Sounds like you know what to do. There are actually portable little stove-top like ranges that plug into an outlet that aren't too expensive. You could also get a foreman grill and a blender, too. That equals lots of possibilities. Other carb sources: sweet potatoes, brown rice (if you get that range you can cook it by boiling it), bread, cereal.

My college had a lot of healthy food to choose, but also a lot of bad food. Where you going to college? For instance, if you are going somewhere in the south they will probably have more fried foods, and other regions will have different types of food some good, some bad.

not much you can do about eating healthy all the time in college until you move off campus. in the dorm room keep plenty of protein powder, tuna canned chicken, etc. on hand. take advantage of the salad bar, vegetables and fruit from the dinning hall.
I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

true, this is what I have to do. Unfortunately the only quality items offered (consistently) at my school are the salad bar, cottage cheese, and grilled chicken breast (real chicken?). Either way whenever I go to the cafeteria these are the only two things I feel safe eating. It sucks because I need a quality carb source and can't just eat tons of grilled chicken, cottage cheese, and vegetables. This year I may just bring my own oats and make them there; I won't be getting the most for my money but oh well

edit: fruit is also offered it changes. There are always canned peaches and pears, which I never go for, then there will be intervals of melon wedges, oranges, pineapple, bananas, and apples. Sometimes I will have a half an apple, but thats it.

seriously, how are they going to know?

foreman grills and pazaz pizza makers weren't allowed either but they were everywhere. can't have alcohol in the dorms but that didn't stop anybody. just sayin' -- but it sounds like your dining hall is pretty decent.

would having only skim milk as carbs for my 6pm meal be ok? I'll be able to eat oats earlier in the day, and a shake with ground oats. I eat at the cafeteria at 6pm and will have chicken, veggies, maybe some CC, and Milk? My 9pm meal I can have some oats, or would this be too late to have such a carb source? my midnight meal is cottage cheese and nat. pb. how should I work out those carbs in my last 2 meals before bed?

this is true. junior year we get our own apartments, but thats two years away. the only thing remotely good about cafeteria food is bulking comes easy...might add a decent amount fo fat though. o well. thats life. my carb sources will most likely be oats and apples(eaten in conjunction 3 times daily). canned beans, rice, and a shitload of other fruit and milk.

im going to ramapo college of new jersey

Thats bullshit that colleges force you to live in the dorms for two years. Why is that legal?
