Meal Replacements
Whats the best and where do you buy it?
Problem: I'm in a military sea going service and usually get deployed every other week. The cook on the boat sucks , he cooks fatty, low protein meals. While deployed it's the only thing available to eat besides the ton of junk food (pringles, doritos, candy bars) he keeps the store room stocked with. I've only been at this new unit for a couple months and I am already getting fat. I'm getting sick of eating this crap and I'm starting to get lazy from it. Question: So far I've come to the conclusion that KillerMRP is the best meal replacement out there. I need it in a powder form because of lack of space. Whats everyones thought on this? Is it healthy to to live off meal replacement shakes for a week at a time every other week? |

I like the way they have a ton of flavors to chose from, muscle milk that is. I think I'll try them. So is it healthy to replace every meal for a week with a shake?

both MetRx and Muscle Milk are excellent MRP's. I wouldn't just live on shakes, bring some tuna also. you can eat some of the carbs that they cook and all the salads, veggies etc.

I would try to pack some other things like nuts, dehydrated fruits, canned food, etc. Meal replacements are okay, but I would try to avoid them being my only source of nutrition.

I feel your pain dude. When I was doing submarine duty we were underwater 90-100 days at a pop. Our mess specialist was a guy named Espanoza. Thanks to what he thought was "the best damned authentic Mexican cooking in the world," I can't eat tomales to this day, and it has been 9 years since I was active duty. God he sucked.
Anyway, I don't think you should swap shakes for real food for a week at a time. But you can boost your protien intake easy enough. A shake or two a day is good, but add the tuna, and maybe some beef jerky. You can store that forever and it won't take up much of your very limited space. Fair winds and following seas. Good luck. |

They are forms of fatty acids (saturated) that are digested slightly differently in the body to regular fats (they are taken directly to the liver in the blood unlike other fats which are taken up in the lymphatic system)... In the liver they are also processed slightly differently so they do not give you as much energy as other fats. They are handy in the first 2 or so weeks of low carb dieting - as they have a slight metabolic advantage to regular fats... however after about 2-3 weeks the liver adapts to the effects and it is no longer useful/advantagous. |

I have always used it in conjunction with whey. I use the whey for pre- and post- and the muscle milk for a pre-sleep shake on my On days and a meal substitute on my Off days.

But it would probably be a similar time frame to the time that it takes to adapt, maybe a little longer, so you could try 3 weeks on, 4 weeks off and see if that worked... |
