Helo me with the coconut oil, please!
I would like to introduce coconut oil into my diet. I've been reading up on the many health/diet benefits, and want to experiment. However, I'd like to know how you all who use it implement it into your meals...
I will probably NOT use it to cook my chicken or fish or as a stir fry for my veggies because I just use water for that. Yes, I like my chicken dry. Is it ok to put in shakes, for example? Make a protein piņa colada or something like that? Does it taste ok if I just eat a teaspoon of it straight out of the jar? Is there a "best" time of the day in which to take it as opposed to another fat source, because of the high concentration of MCTs? What else should I know? |

You be the judge. I use to use Coconut oil alot and one day during a chat with Lyle McDonald and Elzi Volk, I asked them both about it. They both claimed that you would have to injest ALOT of coconut oil to make it worthwhile and seeing it's pure saturated fat you would have enough calories for healthier more important fats such as N3's. IMO, at the amount you are looking to take you are not going to get any benefit out of it and you will be wasting calories on a saturated fat.

I could never get with the whole coconut oil deal myself. The same goes for flax oil. I just stick with fish, walnuts, olive oil, fish oil caps, and Sesathin.

Yeah i suppose i can buy MCTs as caps or liquid, but that defeats the purpose. I wanted it for the taste in foods. If i'm gonna swallow pills i might as well just keep doing nothing but fish oils.

if you eat a little bit of it you are doing nothing but wasting calories on saturated fat? So....if you eat a lot of it you are doing nothing but wasting MORE calories on saturated fat?? The MCTs don't work unless you injest a whole bunch. When injested in small quantities they are just saturated fats but in larger quantities you can gain the benefit of the medium chain? Even if you are intaking a varitey of different fats through out the day wouldn't this be just one more thing to add to it? Is a little saturated fat that bad? I would love to hear their reasoning for their claim.

I gather it's because you don't get the benefits of MCT's unless it's in higher doses.
So IOW getting in a small of amount of MCT's isn't going to do much so therefore the calories you consume in the coconut oil could be used for something else such as n3's or n6's etc.....GG - Coconut Oil is a sat fat so therefore it's a solid form. You can't really pour a teaspoon in your shake because it's solid. Also it doesn't taste very good unless you pan fry with it. I still have some and sometimes I use it but that's only when I'm out of pam or olive oil ![]() |

Sort of off topic: It makes a great hair oil, one of the few that actually penetrates the hair shaft, and washes out much better than other oils I've used.

I did a search on coconut oil. And from what I gather it is ok to cook with it? Is this like a cook once a day with it? Or is it more like now and again? Just looking for something to make the chicken not taste so blah. I am on a cut so what about that? I know if it fits into your caloric daily intake, but if you fit brownies into your daily intake your fine. But all in all, a good deal or not?

lots of saturated fat in it. Good source of medium chain triglycerides. But, I think you have to be taking so much of them a day to get the full effect (or it was something like that. can't friggin' remeber).
I think it tastes good when you cook shrimp in it. I don't use it very often though.

I use coconut oil as a substitute for butter. It tastes great if used appropriately. I like it melted over yams/sweet potatos with some cinnamon. You can add it to oatmeal, put it on toast, and cook your meats in it. It makes fish taste really good. You could add it to a shake, but it will solidify into hard crystals. I think it melts at around 75 degrees farenheit. So, if you live in a warm area, it will probably stay melted in your cupboard.
You need saturated fats in your diet, so you might as well get them from coconut oil, which is mostly MCTs, insted of from animal sources. Remember, its the long chain saturated fatty acids that are associated with heart disease. The coconut oil does not have this problem. Plus, it is easier for your body to use MCTs as energy than other fats. Some say it gives a boost to your thyroid, which regulates your metabolism, thus helping you lose weight. This might be where the high doses discussed above are neccessary in order to see a benifit. |
