Eating or drinking a protein shake while working out is a bad idea.

This is fine - it is not as good as having a proper pre-workout meal but it is certainly better than doing weights on an empty stomach!

if your working out first thing in the morning, try having your pwo shake BEFORE you workout, then have your ppwo meal following your training. Otherwise, make sure you get some decent carbs and protein in 1.5-2hrs at the most before you workout.
