It's hard to quantify that. It depends on your body's rate of protein synthesis, hormone levels, what the excess calories consist of, etc. You just have to monitor your progress using body fat tests, scales, the mirror, progress in the weight room, etc.
The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...
