    Oats

I was told to add Oats to my protein/glutamine/creatine shake for the added calories when on a bulking phase. My question is this: How do I get rid of the grainy texture of the raw oats? Usually I could put up with it but it is hell when then get stuck in your throat.

Yeah I tried this. I put raw oats in my whey shake. It all falls to the bottom. When I was doing this my co-worker laughed as I choked to death on the oats.

I tried soaking the oats overnight and that has helped a bit but other than that I have no idea what else to do.

How about grinding them up in a food processor?

If you are grinding them up in a blender, just let it run longer. Adding more water will help too.

You could use quick oats - these are smaller and will be less 'gritty'. You could also blend them into a powder first and then add it to the rest of the ingredients. Or, soak them and then blend them...

Otherwise, instead of drinking it, just grab a spoon and eat your shake!!

Do you use milk or water?

I made a milk/peanutbutter/oats/banana shake all the time and I didnt have that problem.

Dont you have mad gas though?

I'll add to this. If you grind them, they become a faster acting oat because of smaller particles. This is good for a PWO shake.

I am thinking of buying one of those small electrical coffee grinders to grind up the oats. Anywho, I am using the quick oats and I mix them with water, peanut butter, whey and creatine. I am using it as a PWO and I do not add milk because it would make me feel bloated and gassy.

you should ose the PB post work out. fat's will slow down the digestion too much and you really want to get the nutrients absorbed quickly.

Agreed. Post-workout is not a great place to have PB.

Instead I would increase your carbs - something like:
Whey + quick oats + banana + creatine

I found this product called Oat Muscle ( http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/pfac/oat.html ) , in a 3 lb container. Is it better worse to use this with a whey shake if I have a short time schedule and cant take the time out to eat whole food. I refuse to eat bars since they are far less superior in nutrition.

That looks pretty sweet, but I bet it's the same as good ol' ground up oats..you can grind them urself and prolly save a lot of money.

I tried oats in my shake last night. I let them soak for half hour then heated them on low for a bit. Put with my chocolate shake. It was a warm shake and I thought it was going to taste like shit but was actually really good.

Try some oat bran. I believe it has more protein, and it mixes very easily.

Not more protein but it has more fiber. You will need more liquid with oat bran than regular oats.

but isnt oat bran going to stick to the side of the container because of its coarse texture? Is it really that mixable? I'm looking for something to provide carbs too.

The oat bran I get has 2 more grams or protein than the oats I get. Not really a big difference but a little more. It may not be the case in general though. I'm sure you would know better than me. I checked the fiber content though. Big difference, as you said.

I blend the oats alone, then I put in all the milk and extra ingredients.
Currently cutting (Bulk soon): Lost 43 kilos (94.6 lb) since March of 2005. Current BF%: ~12.5 - 14%
