Egg whites in Shake
Is it ok to put 4-5 egg whites in your protein shake for added protein? Is it absorbed as a protein in the same way as the powder? or does it loose some of its protein amount because its raw? I only do this after my workouts blended really well with my shake. I put in 4-5 egg whites. Its cheaper that way too. And ive been doing it for about two years and have'nt gotten sick.

Man.................good question. I would think the protein would be high since it is not cooked, but I think there probably is a good chance you could catch salmonella.......Would like to see opinions on this also!

the chances of getting salmonella are high, i would have the protien drink then just scrammble the eggs.yes you do loose some of the protein during cooking, but its a small amount.

If you're going to do that, you should use the pasturized egg whites that come in the cartons!

The chances of getting a salmonella-infected egg is 1 in 10k. Chances of you getting that egg and eating it raw is slim, but still...
btw, raw egg whites have a protein called avidin that prevents biotin (a B vitamin) absorption and can lead to a biotin deficiency (unless you're already supplementing with it) which can cause lethargy and all sorts of nasty stuff - hair degeneration and nails etc... Not good. By cooking the egg white you deactivate the protein avidin and biotin can be absorbed. There's also somewhere i recall reading that the gut doesn;t digest raw eggs as readily as cooked eggs. I don;t have anything to show you for this, but i've definately read it somewhere. If you insist on doing this btw, definately used pasturised stuff. |
