Arguing with my dad about protein

I still live at home with my parents thanks to university life.

I always eat dinner at home with my family and it is usually cooked by my mom or dad. Sometimes the main source of protein is something incomplete like beans. I'll supplement with a can of tuna or beef or whatever i have left over in the fridge if this happens.

My dad then proceeds to tell me how obsessed I am with body building and that protein sources like beans/nuts/soy become complete when mixed with complex carbs, veggies and other "non-poultry" items. I then tell him that this is old and outdated information and this kind of meal is not a substitute for one with real meat.

    Who's right here?

well your dad is kind of right, you can get a full range of amino acids by combining incomplete protien sources. for example combining lentils and nuts would prodive you with a full range, although i still feel its beneficial to have a complete source in each meal.

He is right. You can get a complete protein by mixing different non-animal proteins. But, as a BBer, you are better off with a more complete source with each meal.

This was recently discussed. See responses from Jodi and Emma here .

Not all complex carbs have protein. But I dont know, incomplete protein are completed with complete proteins or with other incomplete proteins as well?

It depends on what incomplete proteins you are combining and what amino acids each one is missing. These combinations are all complete proteins:

    Rice and beans
    Corn and beans
    Corn and lima beans
    Corn tortillas and refried beans
    Pasta and bean soup
    Soybeans and seeds

rob to the rescue^^^ ..ur father is right in the aspect that mixing certain carbs together provide a more complete protein source then straight up protein by it self..but as a bb u need more protein to build muscle so u want the best source possible..i remember awhile seeing a chart about the best digestible protein listing whey, egg whites and then chicken/turkey breast for as close to 100% protein absorption

I hate when I argue with my dad and he is correct. Sorry bro, your dad is right, mixing beans and rice or other incomplete proteins will form complete proteins. BUT, they just don't taste the same as steak. That right there is enough to argue about!

Although I generally try to consume a complete source of protein at every meal, it is probably fine to mix two incomplete sources. Your muscles aren't going to atrophy if you lack a complete protein source one meal out of every few days.

However, I would ask my dad why he gives a shit? As long as you eat what was cooked in addition to the supplemental complete protein source you whip up, then what's the problem?

Thanks for the responses. Ill have to tell him he was right.

But most of you guys got the wrong idea about the mood of the argument. It wasn't a fight, dishes being thrown, holes in walls being punched etc. over protein. It was a friendly conversational disagreement at the dinner table.

Well you better start practicing then! You have to hit him with a dish to the face before he has a chance to wallow in your admittance of inaccurate knowledge.

Don't let your dad tell you not to take supplemental protein. Whey protein supplements are so much more pure and better quality protein and its formulated with amino acids and other compounds so its the most effective protein source for building muscle. If you eat a big meal of protein mixed with carbs, your body starts the process of turning all the carbs to sugar and most of the protein does not get absorbed.

    1. I meant I'd supplement with tuna, "supplement" being a verb, not a noun.

    2. Just cuz im canadian doesn't mean i have a world class ski resort in my back yard. I bet the percent of time Canadians spend "ridding" is just the same as you fellow Americans. Yes, I do enjoy snowboarding and i try to get out to the mountains once every year.

    3. Where did you get the idea that my dad is a hippy vegan? Please re-read my original post and notice that i said, "sometimes the main source is something incomplete..." ie. once a week.

    Anything else?
