well your dad is kind of right, you can get a full range of amino acids by combining incomplete protien sources. for example combining lentils and nuts would prodive you with a full range, although i still feel its beneficial to have a complete source in each meal.

..ur father is right in the aspect that mixing certain carbs together provide a more complete protein source then straight up protein by it self..but as a bb u need more protein to build muscle so u want the best source possible..i remember awhile seeing a chart about the best digestible protein listing whey, egg whites and then chicken/turkey breast for as close to 100% protein absorption
