    Diet Soda?

WHat is the low down on diet soda. Is it an acceptable substitute or should it be avoided all together? I drink about one every day.

I have one diet soda/day myself, and haven't died yet. It helps for a bit of change mid-way through the day.

It's extremely hard on your teeth as all carbonated drinks are. Also we are not sure what long term effects artificial sweeteners have yet. If you do an internet search you will find all sorts of things that are apparantly caused by diet food.

Calorie wise, juice is no better than regular soda... it's crap.

It's safer to just stick to water.

A little of any thing now and then probably won't hurt you, That said:

I used to pound the diet coke!!!! It was my fav.

I started noticing a few things, my joints hurt, I felt spacey (not like after a hard workout spacey, but coulden't remember names places people, spacey), and started getting panic attacks....full on fight or flee response!!!!

I lived with it and thought I was just getting older and nuttier. Until I came across about 10 web sites on Panic attacks that warned anyone suffering to get off Nutrasweet Apparently people who are sensitive can suffer arthritis like symptoms, memory loss and panic attacks, as well as other stuff.

Well it takes 60 days to work out of your system and what do you know....I've been symptom free ever since!!!!

I suppose that fact that Donald Rumsfeld's company holds the patent for Aspartame means that the gov. has really tested it and made sure its very very safe

I learned my lesson and eat and drink as clean as possible.

I can't help but drink the stuff w/ Captain Morgan's. Regular coke is just too sweet for my taste anymore. But diet goes just right with the Cap.

I'd think if the artifical sweetners were bad they would not it wouldnt be on the GRAS list. I'd stay away from saccharin though.

Is it an acceptable substitute for what? Having one every day won't kill you or ruin your physique as long as it isn't one 2 liter or one case.

Most Diet Sodas contains aspartame. The only diet soda that I know of that doesn't contain aspartame is Diet Rite. And even the sweetner in that (Splenda) is suspect. I just stick to water and juice.

Actually Coke and Pepsi both use Sucralose as an artificial sweetner in some products. Cadbury/Schwepps (7-UP, Dr. Pepper) and Shasta also use it. In fact, Sucralose is used in over 3500 branded products alone. So, if you want to avoid artificial sweetenrs, you need to either read a lot of labels or eat whole foods.

For every negative report on artificial sweeteners there is a positive one. You can bend statistics to make them imply whatever you want.

OMG! I can't believe you are all stressing over a diet soda

I know many people who drink diet soda up until the their last week for competition prep. A can of diet soda a day is NOT going to hurt you or have ANY effects on your diet.

The worst that a diet soda will do is keep your sugar craving up. The sweetness factor makes you crave sugar but if you can handle it, and don't cave in on the real sweets then you are fine with the soda.
