if you worked out and had a good diet you could gain a 10 pounds of mass or more. just remember only protein makes muscle, but other vitamins and nutrients are good for you in different ways

LOL 10 pounds in a month?! Yeah... Umm... Not likely. A natural bloke (who is not still growing) would be lucky to put 10 pounds of pure muscle on in 4-6 mnths.

But how much you can gain depends on lots of things -
training status (are you a noobie? - if so, you have more protential to gain)
how you are training (are you training to a good enough frequency? Are you adding weight to the bar?)
how much you are eating (calorie sufficency)
how old you are (growing = better for growth)
if you are male/female (male = better)
your genetic potential (some people just suck at growth)

    etc etc...

So no one can say with the information you have given us.

I've gained over 40 pounds in the past 11 months. I didn't even get serious about diet either until a couple months ago. My bf% hasn't gone up dramatically either.

And you also happen to be a young, growing 18 yr old do you not?...

So do you think that at least SOME of that growth has to do with the fact that physiologically you are still 'filling out'?....

Hmmm. Yeah, I suppose. Haven't made any gains in the height department though.

Doesn't matter... Growing when you are young doesn't just mean you grow up... You will be solidifying your bones mass, organ mass and muscle mass - and so these will be getting "denser" (for lack of a better word) rather than 'longer'....

    Emma-Leigh,

I've read some of your stuff and I am impressed with your knowledge. A few more details. Right now I am 5'8, 136. I am 23, male. I do not really know my calories. I train 5 days a week. 3 on, 1 off, 2 on, 1 off. Usually each session is about an hour 10 to an hour 15. I put on 3.5 lbs in the last month, I was just wondering what would be a good pace to add weight with very little fat. (train more, less, eat more, etc)

Lots of other variables (eg: genetic potential... how "new" you are to training... what it is you are doing.... ).

I would think that at your age if you aim for 3-4 pounds a month then you will be getting good solid growth with lower fat gains. Not all of it will be muscle - there is also glycogen, connective tissue, vasculature etc etc but you can make good gains with this speed.
