    Steel-Cut Oats

So I bought some Steel Cut Oats and tried eating them today. It didn't work out too well.

When I buy regular "old fashioned" oats, they cook in the microwave in about 1 minute 30 seconds. The Steel cut oats are still chewey after 5 minutes.

How the hell do you cook these things??????

If you want to cook them in the microwave then soak them in boiling water for ~1 hr before you cook them. Then you usually have to cook them for a few more minutes than regular oats (3 mins at a minumum).

on a stove, bring to a boil, cover, and let simmer for around 40-45 mins. Should be good by then. I cook mine in a rice cooker on "porridge" setting. I just dump in the oats, the water, set the timer to 8AM, and when i wake up ive got oats.

best oats you can have.. I eat them raw sometimes. One serving mixed with cottage cheese or protein powder. Nothing like raw fiber

I make mine ahead of time for the entire week. I separate servings into gladware then at work I nuke it about a minute, add some hot water from the coffee machine till it's the consistency I like, nuke it again till it's hot enough.

On the McCann's website they say you can toast the oats prior to cooking with them to speed up cooking time.

Do you lose any of the nutrients by just downing them with water or something? Will they completely digest or do they just pass through?

So your theory is that soaking them in water will do more for digestion then the acid in your stomach?

No, downing them whole will not effect digestion, or nutrient uptake.

They take about 40 minutes to cook. No wonder why. Steel cut oats are the freaking BEST! You just have to have patience. I make a big batch and put it in the fridge.

What makes steel cuts different than quick oats. I use quick oats all the time. 90 seconds in the microwave, a big scoop of peanut butter and I have a meal in about 2 minutes... Great when I get home and don't feel like cooking anything...
