    Question EMMA-LEIGH or JODI: Edamame?

Would you girls consider edamame a green fibrous veggie? Or a BEAN? A client asked me this recently and I honestly am torn.

looking at the macros, 75g (about 1/2 cup) has: 3g of fat (0 sat), 9g carbs (4g fiber) and 9g protein.

I sometimes eat this as my veggie in a meal just because it's convenient to carry to work, instead of a salad, and doesn't stink when i microwave it, the way broccoli would. Plus it tastes so good! But I just factor it into my calories, regardless...

My client was wondering if she should count it as a carb, and my first answer was no, but then i thought about it and now i'm on the fence!

It's not a big deal if all you eat is half a cup of it a day and you're on a restricted number of calories, but if you eat it all the time, I figure it adds up faster than lettuce, or broccoli or even spinach would because of the higher fat/carb/protein content, right?

So? Green Fibrous Veggie (and thus, unlimited/free food)? or fat/carb/protein source (and thus, must be accounted for)?

Yes it is a soybean, BUT it is considered a vegetable.

    And it is green.

And it has a considerable amount of fiber and protein.

    Hence, my confusion.

I would imagine it would be considered whatever a green bean is, since they are structurally similar.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

Nope. they are not structurally similar. Their similarities stop at the color green....

75g of green beans, cooked, boiled with salt:

    26 cals
    1.42g protein
    5.91 g carbs (2.4g fiber)
    0.21g fat

75g of edamame, cooked, boiled with salt:
    106 cals
    9.26g protein
    8.29g carbs (3.2g fiber)
    4.80g fat

(my stats for edamame in my original post were a little off but close)

Hey there missy I was getting ready to actually email you back and saw this. Edamame is a starchy vegetable. It does have a good amount of fiber but it is a starch veggie. Think Lima Beans - its very similar and those are stachy as well. So no, not a free food at all.

Green beans are considered green veggies as well. Hmmm, looks like someone owes someone else an apology even though the second someone used erroneous methods to obtain the proper conclusion.

    huh?

Green Beans are a fibrous veggie and nothing like soybeans.

Peas, Lima Beans, Soybeans are similar in stucture and are a starchy veggie.

who owes who an apology? i owe you an apology??? i simply stated that green beans are not like soybeans - structurally different, unlike what you said. if that's what you mean, how is that something i have to apologize for?

if it makes you feel any better (and i was one of the someone's you refer to), i'm sorry???

That apology was not from the heart, so I shant except it. But based on the fact that you torture yourself by eating that crap, I will give you a pass.

My feelings were really hurt, I couldn't sleep that night.

    Bumpity bump to this.

Soy beans and peas are legumes - should be considered a starch.

Green beans are not - and are vegetables!
