What do you think is more important to lose to look better? I mean the body is made more of water than fat and water tends to be together with fat cells and not protein cells, so fat shrinks in the absence of water. Have you ever looked to a beef jerky? It looks good.
IMO we should worry more about water percentage in the body than body fat.
Like BigDyl says.. Discuss.

I agree. As though both are needed in the body to survive. Water is more essential.
You cant survive with a too low body fat either.Originally Posted by BulkMeUp

Sometime ago I wondered if there was a machine to calculate how much water in the body, it did exist but they didnt sell it yet.
I agree. But you can survive with a reasonably low bf. With low hydration, you can start to have problems in less than a day.
I know but if we had a way to measure it we could live with the minimum of water in the body that is considered healthy. I guess it would be way less than we carry around now.
I use the pee-test to measure if i am hydrated enough![]()
That is true but sometimes you lose a lot of water in other parts of your body due to exercise or a medication and your pee get dark but after you drink something your pee gets clear again but the water is not stored again in the wrong places. So it is clear with less water in all your body and you are not dehydrated. Did I make myself clear?![]()

I think having a dehydrated fat tissue is only good if you are competing. Other than that I think it would be unhealthy.

This is just plain silly! It doesn't even make sense. If you are dehydrated your body retains water. So this is all moot. Competitors can do it for 1 day and after that they start retaining water too.

It is not about being dehydrated but what thing makes more difference in appearance when reduced, water or fat. Because when you start a good diet most of the weight you lose is water and people think it is fat.
People think it is fat because of the body fat tests made with calipers, when the water goes away the caliper thinks it is fat that was reduced.
Actually, protein attracts water. Ever wonder why when you damage your ankle it swells up? Because the tissue is damaged and protein is there trying to "rebuild" it, and since protein attracts water, you get swelling in that area.Originally Posted by Vieope

Again this is silly. Losing the fat is going to produce a better appearance. There is not much logic to this. Holding water makes you look smooth but if you are lean because you have a healthy diet you won't be holding water. Overweight people hold more water than someone that lives a healthy style.Originally Posted by Vieope

So you accept my explanation that water is more important than fat.Originally Posted by Jodi
NO, never! Fat is WAY more important to lose than water. You need the water. Your body must have the water for circulation, hydration, muscle movement. ect.
I would never accept such a claim as water being more important than fat. Losing fat will make you look better, losing water will make you look sickly and gaunt.
With all you have learned at IM and I surprised at you Vieope.

Obviously losing fat makes you look better than losing water. Take a 300 pound fat person and dehydrate them... They don't look much different. Now take that same person and make them lose 100 pounds... big difference.
By the way, this thread gets my vote for Most Retarded Thread Ever
It is a vieope thread. It is expected.Originally Posted by NeilPearson

So you take a person that is fat and put him on a diet, first he loses a lot of water then fat but he still continues to lose water, although not as much as when he started. When he ends the diet, he looks better because he lost a certain amount of water and fat for that to happen. I am saying the amount of water in the end is always more than the amount of fat.Originally Posted by Jodi
I agree with you, when that person loses 100 pounds he will look much better. But those one hundred pounds were made of what? Fat? Muscle? Fat and mucle or water?Originally Posted by NeilPearson
When a person loses fat, not considering it by the weight but the density since that is how calipers works and other body fat measurements, through density. When he loses 1cm³ of fat, in that area contains water, maybe 60% of water in that 1cm³.
I understand what you are saying, V. When fat is lost, some water is also lost and the body will hold less water. But the way i understood the original question was that loosing water was more important than loosing fat to look leaner. That i dont agree with.
I dont remember exactly if fat cells are polar cells or if it is protein, the ability to hold water. If you take away water from your body those cells try to attract them even if your vital organs needs it, so you become dehydrated although you still have plenty of water around those cells. Losing weight is a way to require less water in the body but what shapes your fat or protein cells is water, what gives them form, so if there was not a shape for a fat cell, it would not look like a fat cell, so you would look better because you wouldnt look like a big fat cell. So water is more important.Originally Posted by BulkMeUp

When person starts dieting they lose 5-8lbs of water. No more than that. They don't continue to lose water while dieting.Originally Posted by Vieope

Nothing shapes them but fat itself. They shrink and then when someone gains weight the fat cells expand to hold the fat (A very simple explanation).Originally Posted by Vieope

You can't lose the fat cell without losing the water. Obviously since most of our body is water, water is the single most important thing in the body. Without water, you would weigh something like 30 pounds... you would also be dead
You can't dehydrate your body to look good. You can do it short term (say for a competition) to give you a little more definition but you can only get so much from dehydration and it is very short term. You can change your body a lot more and it is more long term with dieting and losing fat.
I can't believe I am still posting to this thread
One thing........you don't lose fat cells. They shrink but they don't go away unless you get liposuction![]()
