Alot of people eat cottage cheese before going to bed because it contains casein protein which is slow-digesting.

either is good! both are slow digesting proteins.

I am cutting right now (pre comp) and have egg whites before bed.

Mix both together in a big salad bowl with cucumbers and a little lea & perrins steak sauce.
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

No, they're not pointless for you, you just need to make sure your calories and macros are in check.

Eating at night is a-okay even on a cut provided your calories are accounted for. Even better, is, if you are on a hypocaloric diet, have some carbs at night (blasphemy, I know).... it's protein sparring.
