How much protien can he body actually metabolize at one time. I was at GNC and they said the body can only use 20g of protein at a time so they suggested three shakes a day. Is this actually true?

There's no definitive answer...I believe a larger person would be able to process more at once than a smaller person...however, I belive it's a bit more than 20g, lol....get your nutrition info here...get your supps at GNC

I hope so because I typically consume around 35 grams per meal!

For average size person I think it is between 30-40 grams! But your body will gradually adjust to more if you conssitently up your protein intake!

I thought the math for how much protein you needed was like 1.5g of protein per body weight or is that wrong?

I always heard that it was 50 grams at one time. Alot of those people working at GNC are high school boys who for the most part don't know that they are talking about. that is why you come to a great forum like this one.

You're right about 1.5 g/pound. It should be between 1 and 1.5g per pound. Should be split up through out the day. I even have a shake at 3 in the morning when I wake up to take a pee.

How much protein your body can assimilate at once is a function of your age, size, gender, genetics, the specific protein food, what form it is in, what time of day, and the rest of your diet...a person with a normal metabolism can easily process 30-50 grams at a time, and some studies have shown success at consuming up to 100 grams at post workout, and also at breakfast.
Personally, I am a high protein person, and consume as much as 450-500 grams per day, split over 7 meals. I will consume higher protein after my workout, but other meals usually average about 60-70 grams.

not more than 50 grams of protein per meal every 3-4 hours. More than 50 will result as waste

I agree w/ Gopro, as far as it's a multi-variable equation, but a good # to shoot for for an Avg. male is 40-50g. And the absorption and utility is also dependent upon the protein source.
Ok, so I'm random, long-winded, and talk in circles, but I promise this is leading to a point i.e: 8oz Beef ~ 60g P vs 60g Whey P the beef's P will be absorbed much more slowly than the whey's, placing a need for a longer interval b/w meals (say 4.5-5hrs) as opposed to the whey's activity which is only a 'lil over an hour. Soooooo.... theoretically, your body could utilize more Gs of protein in a 24hr period than whey. But, once again, your body is not likely to be able to use all 50g Whey unless your body's anabolism is up to it. And you probably don't need the calories from a whey meal ever other hour LOL. Thus the need to diversify your P intake and therefore the need for real food. Good rules of thumb 1) Appr 1.4g/lb body weight (non-chemically enhanced )2) Split your P intake evenly over 6-8 (min of 5) meals 3) 1-1.5hr after training, take in 1/3g per pound body wt of Whey P 4) eat a real meal an 1-1.5hr after whey JMO
