diet challenge for nikeguy

ok people - could use help on this one. fiance is ready to make some diet changes. he's a very unusual "specimen". 6' 1" 215 lbs and very very lean. visible 6 pack all the time and tiny waist. he's a natural athlete and has good muscle development. i'd probably commit certain non felony crimes to get his hamstrings.

here's the hard/challenging part that makes him unusual. he barely eats. seriously. he goes all day long without food and will play tennis or basketball in the morning (both if he has the day off) and go to the gym at night. sometimes with an empty stomach. other times with maybe 600-800 calories in him for the day. i don't know how he has the size he does and i definitely don't know how he has the energy and strength he does.

crazy enough - he's continuing to get stronger each week in the gym. i know it makes no kind of sense but i've seen it for 5 years and i'm telling it like it is. he's been having a protein shake with me in the morning the last week or so and has one after the gym.

he's ready now to make some changes and try to eat more and better so he can gain some lean muscle mass. when i sat with him and talked about eating 5-6 meals a day and around 2500 calories he basically said - no way, can't do it. too drastic a change. and i know he won't do it. what he has done lately is cut way back on his sugar. he had been drinking koolaid by the pitcher and each on has a full cup of sugar. switched to all water all the time so that's good at least.

i've tried to come up with something that isn't the ideal suggested diet for his size when trying to gain muscle because he just won't eat that much or that often. but rather then give up entirely we figure there has to be a compromise - something better then going all day with barely any food and then eating a small dinner (even if it isn't the ideal).

please check out what we've come up with and make suggestions. (no yams or turkey lol)

here's what we have
meal 1
whey shake
whipping cream
strawberries (4)

meal 2
can tuna
either in salad or sandwich on whole wheat

meal 3
5-6 oz chicken breast (grilled)
rice or baked potato
veggie

meal 4
beef - flank steak most likely
brocolli or corn or salad

meal 5 after gym
same shake as meal 1

he's going to start creatine next week. plans to take it w/gatorade powder right after training. not too worried 'bout the sugar b/c he is so lean.

any suggestions to make it better but not too much too soon so he won't say "screw it" and go back to not eating all day.

thanks all. i sure did make him sound difficult!

First of all...the man is a genetic freak! If I ate like him I'd weigh 140 lbs. My question is...what is the goal now? To add bulk, only lean muscle, go for lower bodyfat?

My only comment so far without knowing anything else is to not use the whipping cream in the post workout shake. At this time we want a very fast acting protein, which is covered with the whey, but also little or no fat as this will slow absorption of nutrients. Also, strawberries is not a great post workout carb, as fructose is best for restoring liver, but not muscle glycogen. He would be better off adding some maltodextrin to the whey post workout.

How can he eat like that?! It looks good NG, you're right, you know what he's willing to do, you don't want to go too strict, I think it looks good, including the post w/o shake He could probably add carbs here too...oats, rice or potato.

Hey sweets...you do not agree with my assessment of the post workout shake? This is not a time for fat, but for fast acting proteins and simple carbs. See ya cutie.

I assume that after workout he'll have the creatine & gatorade drink first and then meal 5: the whey shake/whipcream/strawberries drink after?

The gatorade may not have maltodextrin in it for optimum GI but it still has a GI of 125 (based on white bread) so wouldn't that be enuf to ease the poor guy in and then go on to the fancy-shmancy supplements after some time being?

The high GI carbs should be taken in ALONG with the fast acting protein. In fact, the creatine can simply be added to a whey, maltodextrin(or some other high GI carb) drink.

The whipping cream and strawberries are simply noy optimal at this time, that is all I'm saying. Can't help being a perfectionist
