A little help with diet problem..

Hey guys, as some of you may know, im only 16 years old..I play lacrosse and want to gain more muscle mass over the offseason and also get faster..
The only problem i have is that my diet is off..

I want to have a good diet but me being only 16, I don't want to be counting carbs and calories and such.. i try to stay away from junk food and stuff but I just don't know what to do..

I don't really know what im asking.. I dunno, I want to diet but I don't want to be like oh I can't eat that I'm on a diet.

Im VERY confused...help in any way, shape or form is greatly appreciated

Staying away from junk food isn't as important as staying close to good food. The best diet is specific, so plan on counting calories and carbs. It seems to me that you don't even know what to ask ("I don't really know what im asking.. I dunno, I want to diet but I don't want to be like oh I can't eat that I'm on a diet"). Best thing to do is read the stickies young man, maybe then after you come up with a simple diet we can help you further. The main key to a diet working is you knowing how to work it

yeah i think im just going to go to the supermarket tommorow with the shopping list that is attached to one of the stickey's and plan out meals because i really would like to start seeing results..

i procrastinate all the time and say ill diet eventually but its getting me nowhere, and lifting without proper nutrition is a waste of time.

Just work to change bad habits and make progress. Just because you're on a diet doesn't mean you have to be 100% serious about it ALL the time. You're young and your metabolism is high... you will be able to get away with some cheat meals.

Once you learn how to control your caloric intake better, and learn exactly how much food you need to cut or bulk, it makes life easier. You have a better idea of what your body needs, so you can cheat a little and still stay on track for the most part. This means that you don't have to be "that guy" who can't eat anything, even when he's out with his friends trying to have a good time. You can be "that guy" if you want to, but you don't have to.

Just try recording what you eat to start, to get a better idea of the calories you're really eating. Try to make progress as the days go by. It's not going to happen over night, but if you really try to learn more about dieting and exercise, then it won't be long before it's second nature.

P.S. Lifting weights without proper nutrition is not a waste of time. It's better than nothing, and it keeps you healthier than you would be without lifting at all.

You don't need a 'strict diet'. YOU ARE 16 YEARS OLD!! ENJOY YOUR YOUTH!! Don't count, don't obsess and don't become overly anal about 'what is good and what is bad'...

Eat healthy.... Lots of vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds, lean proteins (seafood, poultry, lean game meats), eggs, skim dairy... Do not deny yourself meals out with your mates or the occasional pizza or cake - just keep it sensible... So although having them everyday is not good, still allow yourself to have these sorts of things once or twice a week. Apply the rule of 80:20... Be 'good' 80% of the time, and allow yourself 20% freedom.

You will be able to monitor yourself to see if you are 'over-endulging' or to see if you are not eating enough - but don't make your life about "counting calories" or make broad "can't have that" statements/rules.

If you just use a little common sense and combine it with sensible training you will be fine.

Some of the best advice I have seen from this site. Some of the "advice givers" on this forum tend to lose sight of the fact that going on a strict diet and workout plan can be quite overwhelming, especially to a high school aged individual. The message is usually taken this way by these kids: "All or nothing". Most advice I see given here sets people up for failure before they take their first gram of protein and lift their first weight. Albeit great information with obvious research and knowledge, your average person does not have 100's of dollars to spend a week on organic this, and fat free that. Nor do they have the patience or the time or the interest to sit down and write out diet macros (I'd rather pluck ass hairs). Emma hit the nail on the head and told this kid exactly what he needed to hear.

No - Don't log... But 'be aware' of what you are eating and the amounts you are eating... As long as you are eating well and training hard you will be unlikely to do anything so stupid as to mess up results so logging will provide you with no useful information.

When there is a need for absolute accuracy, then you should start LOGGING first (don't alter anything, just start to log) and then you can see what exactly you have been doing and what you will need to modify and monitor more closely...

I think it depends on how you feel about logging. If you don't mind doing it then it isn't a horrible idea. It may give you useful information or at least keep you thinking about what you are eating. In this sense, it could help with motivation. Sometimes it is easy to think you are just cheating occassionally but if you logged it, you might be surprised. At 16, it's probably not critical though as long as you are attempting to eat healthy.
