just a quick question im trying to gain muscle & drop my body fat %
im wondering if a bowl of cereal (like Raisin Bran or Cheerios) would be OK to have for breakfast if I also have something healthier like a bowl of oats topped with protein powder and berries?

kill the cereal. Oats are my favorite food ALL Around. The fact that I eat it 3 times a day on average and tend to not gain any fat while its my only carb supp might tell you something. Cereal flat out suck ass. Too much sugar.

Wait a second man...there are GOOD high fiber cereals out there with LOW glycemic indexes...like All-Bran (the one with oatbran) that actually curb your appetite, maintain your blood sugar AND greatly assist digestion.

I'm eating it right now and while I HATE the extra trips to the restroom, i'm dropping body fat like crazy. I went from a disgustingly fat 5'9 200lbs in Nov/Dec 2005 to now a lean/muscular 5'9 161 (with clothes) (except with stubborn little pockets of fat i'm still trying to shed)

He's right-I made an error in not seperating the good from the bad. When i think of cereal, I think of cereal like Lucky Charms, Froot Loop, Cocoa Pebbles and Apple Jacks
These types of cereal have no place in a fitness enthusiast's arsenal. On the other hand, All Bran and Kashi as well as )non sweetened) Shredded Wheat are suitable.

whats your opinion on quaker oats, regular brand in the packets ( easier to bring to work ).

these are not a good substitue to old fashioned oatmeal. The packets are higher GI/GL and will cause a quicker insulin spike than old fashioned oats. If you don't like the taste of old fashioned oats, add some cinnamon and stevia to it.

You can get the generic brand type of puffed wheat, puffed corn, etc that is actually pretty good. There are sugar coated varieties out there so make sure you check the ingredients... you can find these types of cereal with only one ingredient (puffed corn or wheat) - no added sugar or anything.

Kashi Go-Lean is pretty good too. The Go-Lean Crunch isn't as good though.

I used to do the same thing, bring those convenient little packets with me to work. But once I learned that they were not a good choice v/s the 'real' thing I stopped eating them. I realize that 1/2 the battle when it comes to eating clean is preparation. We tend to grab what seems most convenient to fit out crazy schedules, but convenience doesn't necessarily = good for you. What I finally did was buy a container of Quaker Whole Grain Oats and each morning I take a little bit and make myself a cup.You can also buy sandwhich size ziplock bags and pre-measure the amount you fancy. - LORD knows I've invested plenty on those ziplock bags!

Speaking of oats I haven't tried Irish Oats (which were highly recommened to me) what's the difference, other than the price?

You're totally missing the boat. Kashi and other natural/Organic cereals have multiple whole grain sources including oats, are high in protein and fiber, and have little to no artificial ingredients or preservatives. You keep your oats, ill take my cereal.

Kashi has double the fiber and protein as oatmeal, wouldn't that be the better choice or is there other factors involved?

It is not a better choice than Fiber One, All Bran or Uncle Sam. The reason being is the amount of sugar and soy protein.

Ok. Would these be just as good or a better choice than oatmeal? Oatmeal or cottage cheese I've never been able to stomach because or texture. The only way I consume oatmeal is in a protein shake.

Hell in fact, the All-Bran kept me satiated for longer periods of time than the oatmeal (keeping my blood sugar in check) plus it kept my digestive system more regular and healthy...IMO, you can't beat that. I'd eat a bowl of it and I swear I could go 3 hours without feeling a bit of hunger. (versus with the sugary kid cereals i found myself eating bowl after bowl due to the high GI and the whole blood sugar thing)

thats exactly why I like oatmeal. Te feeling of satiety after finishing a bowl. The sense of satisfaction always occurs no matter what I out in.

But goddamn, I love a bowl of fruity pebbles, cocoa puffs, apple jacks, frosted miniwheats, trix, or cocoa pebbles.
