dpw8 (etc) carb up question

i'm on the carb depletion where only carbs i eat are veggie carbs. every 4th day i carb up for my last meal (yam, oatmeal, pb, banana).

i've noticed that last 2 times that i look my best on day 4 of depletion before the carb up. is that saying anything important? i would have thought i'd look my worst right before the carb up. (but then again - i don't really know what i'm talking about - yet)

does this mean i should deplete longer? i won't mess with anything yet. i'm halfway thru the third week. i guess after week #4 i'll have to think about making a tweak.

yes it is!

Typically you would look your best 12-36 hours after a carb-up, during your W/O, and totally flat by the fourth day!

Perhaps because of your running backround, your liver and muscles have been trained to hold more
glycogen, and hence water. We can use BW to determine if this is happneing. Before we decrease your carbs or alter macronutrients, I would prefer that you up the intensity of your W/Os first, and see what happens! (looking for depletion)

my definition blurs after the carb up. not that i'm exactly ripped (still have a fat booty) but i can see the changes clearly in my upper body. last night before the carb up on day 4 of depletion i looked very lean and defined. no trouble getting full feeling in my muscles.

then after the carb up i feel sort of stuffed and bloated. i don't feel that way now (13 hours after the carb up) but my definition is less then it was before i carbed up.

i actually don't have a running background. not doing cardio now. my workouts only last about 35-50 minutes depending on bodyparts for the day but i move at a quick pace and really push hard.

NG....I notice the same thing. Although I'm not cutting, I do watch what I eat during the week, and on Fri, or Sat. night, I eat what I want. I notice I always look leaner by thursday and friday!!

Unless you are peaking for a competition day, I would not worry about blurring your definition from your carb-up. When preparing for a competition it needs to be more of an exact science.

Basically what is happening to you is that you are simply "spilling over," or in other words the water that is being pulled into your muscles is also spilling into subcutaneous departments, thereby bluring some definition.

This is not necessarily going to foul up the whole purpose of your diet. I say keep going the way you are for now. You will only need to tweak when and if you are ready to step onstage.

I wasn't worried so much about the carb up part....I was worried that I must not be depleted if I look better on day 4 of depletion before I carb up. Thought I should have a hard time getting muscles to pump and look flat (no bra size jokes please) by day 4 of depleting. Made me wonder if I should go 5 days before carbing up. But I'm not going to mess with it. Seems to be working. I did find that part odd though

Hi Nikegirl,
I noticed the same thing. Tonight I am going to carb-up and this morning I woke up with my stomach all flat, abs showing, veins out and tonight I will carb up and tomorrow it will all be gone. Then by day 3 or 4 you feel defined and stomach flat again. Weird! Just thought I'd let you know I noticed the same thing. So your not the only one girl!

Sounds mostly like hydration changes, at least the program is WORKING!

Mochy, you sound lean, but as a person gets even leaner, you'll find that the body changes every few hours, it's almost enough to make you psychotic!

Yes...I can vouch for that, the leaner you get...it's like you can tell that you had peanut butter instead of flax....it IS enough to make you psychotic, lol!

OMG! Psychotic is definately the word. I go crazy sometimes. Certain times of day my stomach feels nice and flat and I feel great and then a few hours later I feel squishy and wonder what the f**k did I eat to make me feel this way. Then a few hours later I feel great again. I don't know what is going on. Sometimes the paranoia kicks in that I might have messed up. AAAHHH I guess it takes some time to get use to. PB, Almond Butter and Cashew Butter is my natural enemy. We have a love hate relationship! I use to never eat anything for lunch when I was a kid but PBJ or PB and Fluff (Fluffanutter Sandwhich) MMMMMMMM. LOL My Fav!

and yes - it is working! i'm not going to change anything yet (i'm in the 3rd week). thanks.

You know what, when I deplete I am often not too unhappy with the way I look. I am tremendously dry, with thin skin, and some vasularity. My stomach is flat and tight and although I don't feel "full," I still kinda like the look...LOVE BEING DRY!

All I am saying is that don't take "looking good" as a sign that your carb depletion is not complete.
