Hypothetically, A person takes in 1.5 gallons of water a day. They drink in the gym (about a gallon). Should this be counted as that part of that 1.5 gallions a day, or should that be included in the 1.5 or as extra? sorry for the math problem.

Hmm good question. Not sure of the answer on that. Funny timing though, a whole article came up on T-nation dedicated to hydration. It's a really good read.
I think that's some major sweating if you drink almost 3.8L of water during the workout (course you're likely a big guy and it's a fair amount of blood volume to replace) . I'd say you probably would need close to another gallon for the day then. That's a shite load of potty breaks though

If you were just lifting and don't sweat profusely, if your session was under 30-45 minutes and if didn't lose a ridiculous amount of fluids during your workout session, I'd say yeah count it. HOWEVER, since everyone's body's cooling system varies, "just lifting" to you might mean you sweat profusely the minute you walk in the gym, whereas for me, i barely sweat even if i'm training intensely.
If you're doing cardio or some kind of endurance activity and you sweat, you should sip some water every 15 minutes to replace the fluids lost during the activity. Typically in taht situation, the fluid consumed during the workout is in addition to what you'd drink all day.
You need to judge for yourself whether you need more water than the hypothetical 1.5L based on your own body's hydration levels. Best way to know if you're drinking enough is to check the color of your urine. It should always be clear or pale yellow. Dark yellow or almost brown = "houston, we've got a problem." See the attached doc (i hope my upload works!)
Some experts don't buy into the theory that most americans are chronically dehydrated, stating that we get water in small or even large amounts from EVERYTHING....and that after thousands of years of evolution, ridding ourselves of a properly triggered thirst mechanism would be a step backwards. If you buy into this line of thought, then there really is no measure of how much water you should be drinking in a day. Just food for thought....
I myself drink water with most meals, milk with some. Water when I workout and all throughout the day, I don't measure it out, just drink when I'm thirsty.

I agree and disagree, if that's possible. While I posted the general advice given to athletes regarding hydration, I don't agree that all your water intake has to be in the form of actual water or fluid drank throughout the day. When you eat, you get water from your foods, and that should count toward your water intake as well. So thank you for pointing that out. It is often overlooked.
if you're not an endurance athlete or spend an unusual time outside in hot weather performing some sort of activity (soccer, football, manual labor) and don't lose buckets of fluids a day, hydration for normal people is where you're at, just be sure to drink some water throughout the day and not go all day like a camel wihtout taking a sip.
If you DO perform endurance training (cycling, running, etc.) or are outside in the heat for a prolonged period of time, you should definitely be more aware of your water intake and NOT wait until you feel thirsty. By then you are already in a dehydrated state.

Goalgetters reply is a sound one. Unless your urine after your workout is dark (indicating dehydration status), you're probably OK with your current intake. Add a little more post workout if you are worried, but consider also your protein intake, as it can cause some mind dehydration as well. If its high (2 grams or more per pound bodymass) drink a little more water. Ditto if you use dextrose in your protein drinks post workout for recovery.
but if you read the article from tnation it states that by the moment you sense thirst, youre beyond dehyrdated.
I don't believe that. Maybe in the case of an athlete WHILE he's competing or a person doing some kind of activity where he's losing serious amounts of fluid.....
You just can't tell me that while I'm sitting at my desk typing this out, that if I get thirsty I'm beyond dehydrated.
That's why I hate some articles like that. That is one seriously overstated generalization.
Uh oh, I just gotta little thirsty doin all this typin, I better hurry before it's too late!!!

Just to add to that..... B vits will screw with urine color as well so it's not always dehydration....mind you, B vitamins have a pretty distinct reaction....so it's important to recognize the difference.
