I've seen many protein bars, shakes and meal replacments scrutinized to a pretty serious degree on these boards, and it's been helpful, so I figured I would throw up the info one of the protein bars I occasionaly (a few a week) consume to keep my eating schedule on track. Maybe there is a better choice out there... Those "Green Bars" looked interesting to me. Anyway...
Ingredients: Soy Nuggets (Soy Protein Isolate, Tapioca Starch, Salt), EnergySmart (Fruit Juice, Natural Grain Dextrin), Vitasugar Syrup (Isomalto-oligosaccharide), Xtreme Fruit Blend (Raspberries,Cranberries,Blueberries,Blackberries) Inulin, Whey Protein Isolate (from milk), High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Whole Grain Rolled Oats, Gum Arabic, Vegetable Glycerine, Almonds, Honey, Vitamins and Minerals, Vitamin A (Palmitate), Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol), Vitamin E (Acetate), Biotin, Folic Acid, Niacinamide, Pantothenic Acid (D-Calcium Pantothenate), Vitamin B1 (Thiamin Mononitrate), Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine HCI), Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Chromium Chloride, Copper Gluconate, Iodine (Potassium Iodide), Iron (Ferrous Fumarate), Manganese (Manganese Sulfate), Selenium (Sodium Selenite), Zinc (Zinc Gluconate), Lecithin (an emulsifier), Citric Acid, Malic Acid Breaks down to: 270 calories 7g total fat 0.5g saturated fat 0mg Cholesterol 290mg Sodium 140mg Potassium 33g Total Carbs 13g Dietary Fiber 9g Sugars 3g Sugar Alcohol 8g Others Carbs 25g protein I've italicized the ingredients that really jumped out at me when I realized they were there... Anyone can shed light on those or just give a general opinion on the whole deal? Thanks in advance "Knowing is not enough we must apply." --- "Willing is not enough we must do."

Overall it looks pretty good. Not as good as those greens bars but not bad. Nice fiber count too. The only reason I would stay away from it is because of the soy. Soy is known for it's phytoestrogen plus it's one of the highest allergy foods out there and many people can't digest it properly either.

Thanks for the input Jodi. I will have to do some research on phytoestrogen. I'm not familiar at all.
I seem to be able to handle the soy as far as digestion goes so I'm not incredibly concerned about that but will keep it in consideration and make sure not to let soy become a main source of my daily protein. The sugars and other odd looking (at least unknown to me) ingredients are what had me worried but I've seen you rip protein bars to shreds so a "pretty good" from you and the fact they taste great pretty much make this an acceptable bar to me. I must try one of those Green Bars though, could care less if they taste horrible. Thanks again! BTW, anyone curious, this particular bar is $15 for a box of 12 @ allstarhealth.com so I thought it was a pretty decent deal considering how overpriced these things tend to be "Knowing is not enough we must apply." --- "Willing is not enough we must do."

Yup!
![]() http://www.allstarhealth.com/de_p/5761.htm Pretty well known brand I guess. I only tried them when they slashed the price in half and found out how good they tasted. I like all of the flavors and the macros are only very slightly different on the others. |
