Managing your diet while not at home

How do you guys get proper food when not at home? I'm talking 'not at home' in general here, but I'd like to know specifically how you manage it while on vacation or away from your home for a week or more.

The reason I ask is because I'm going on a schooltrip to Rome for 8 days. I'm staying in a monastary (yes, really) and I have no fridge, I don't speak Italian and the meals served there are shit. White pasta with sugary sauce is about as good as it gets there... We're going there by plane so I can't bring too much stuff with me. Currently bulking with 3500-4000 calories per day.

So what should I do, how can I preserve my diet there?

Just enjoy the week (with-in reason), and get back on the horse when back home.

While on vacation, I don't watch my diet. Part of enjoying a vacation is enjoying the food.

While away on business, I try to stick to healthier meals like lean meats and salads, and I don't eat everything that is served to me, since restaurant portions are much larger than what I'd eat at home.

I've been to Rome, the food is fucking amazing. Healthy? Not exactly... Just eat lasanga, pasta and pizza till you puke, then get back on track when you return.

It's worth cheating for real Italian food.

Similarly I was just in South America for an extended stay... the food was amazing. I ate steak and empenadas and drank my ass off for 5 weeks. I gained 10 lbs of fat. Oh well. Haven't had a drink or a cheat meal since.
Since I've been back over a month now it's gone. 8 days is no big deal, just consider it a break from your training and diet, we all need those from time to time.
On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

I agree with the above comments. I wouldn't stress about it- just enjoy yourself- what's the point of going someplace fun and exciting if you don't indulge yourself in the cultures cuisine. Just make sure you do some sort of exercise-- like walking-- which shouldn't be a problem in Rome. You could even do some bodyweight exercises as part of a circuit...

I realize it's a vacation and I'm definitely going to enjoy myself. I know I'm going to be drinking too. I don't want to completely nail myself though. I figured I'd just enjoy myself in the evenings when we're free to do what we want, but keep a decent diet in the morning and afternoon.

I'm bringing protein bars and probably some fish oil caps and multi-vitamins, because I'm going to starve to death if I don't have food between breakfast and dinner (as is the plan) and I could use the antioxidants due to lack of sleep and alcohol. I'll buy some nuts there I think.

Thanks for the input so far. Cheers!

When I travel for work, I always take some protien powder. I can mix with milk or water. I try and eat lean meals with lots of vegies. If on vacation, then I am not to restrictive, but I eat in moderation. And try and snack on apples or nuts between meals to keep from binging on calorie dense meals.

Canned tuna, nuts, protein bars, protein powder, 100% whole wheat or whole grain crackers...things like that. You can get creative.

Bring some packaged MRPs and a shaker cup. All you need to buy is some water. A couple of those a day plus enjoy the local food.
