    Buffalo Meat

    Anyone else here eat it?

I've started recently. Its really good for you. Way better than beef. Apparantly 90% less fat, 50% less cholesterol, and way more good stuff in there!!!

How Buffalo Meat Compares to Beef

Maybe there aren't many places that sell it?

I love Buffalo. My step-dad works for a company that distributes it along with other meats to restaurants, and he always brings home pounds and pounds of it. When I'm home and not at school, I make buffalo burgers quite frequently.

    yea, whole foods.

I have found buffalo and ostrich at regular grocery stores though. you just need to look for it.

deer and elk were not purchased by me and I have never seen them at a store. The deer was served to me at a health food diner in NYC that I used to go to all the time and the elk was given to us by one of ivonne's clients who hunts.

I'm lucky, there is a restaurant about 2 miles from my home that serves it but they also sell 2lb packages of the buffalo meat for $7.00.

$3.50 per pound seems pretty inexpensive to me. I guess it just depends on where you live. Not exactly a lot of buffalo in Kansas... I have seen some though.

Oh and did you guys also know that buffalo are a lot less detramental to the environment than cows? I was reading something about that. It has a lot to do with the fact that they're native here I guess.

I just checked and it looks like they will ship the bison to you. It's a bit pricier online at $7.98 for the 2lb pack but it you cant get it locally then it may be worth it. Look at the top of the page and it shows that the shipping is $35 per order so it would be wise to stock up and order a bunch at once.

My favorite way to cook up the bison:
    1. Thaw the 2lb bulk pack of bison and cut into equal portions of about 1/2lb each. It comes vacuum packed in a square shape that is about 1" thick so I just cut it in squares. Season with your favorite steak seasonings.
    2. Preheat the grill and put a bit of olive oil or Pam on the grate so the bison wont stick since it is fairly low in fat.
    3. Grill at a medium to medium-high heat.
    4. As the bison is grilling saute some cut up green peppers, red onions, and some portobello mushrooms in some olive oil spiced with some season salt and garlic powder.
    5. When all is cooked top the bison with the pepper/onion/mushroom mixture and enjoy!
    6. I'll usually serve brown rice on the side as well.
