    Diet for Very Overweight Newbie

    Hello all,

A close friend of mine is looking to lose some weight and get in shape, and has asked me for advice. I dont want to steer him wrong, so thought I would throw out a few questions to you all. (Ive also sent him the link to this forum -- hopefully he will check it out!)

He stands about 5"10 at maybe 260-280 pounds. By his estimates, he needs to lose between 70-100 pounds. I dont know his bodyfat, but it is certainly very high as he does not train with weights or do any cardio (he is going to start along with his new diet though).

Ive read the stickies, and have a good base knowledge regarding acceptable foods to eat, the protein/carb/fat ratio, etc...

My question is how many calories should he start out consuming? Should I base this on his target weight of around 180-190lbs? If so, would that mean 1800-1900 calories?

Sorry if Ive missed something that was asked and answered in previous posts,

    Christian

Being a newbie, you don't want to overwhelm him. Everything in small strides, let him adjust to the lifestyle. Start by getting him to be more active, and removing certain poor food choices on a weekly basis.

Thats a very good point Iain, i was reading an article by Mike Dugdale and he said that if you eat 2/3 meals a day, then for a few weeks eat for, if you suddenly jump from 2/3-7/8, you wont feel any benefit for a while and your more than likely give up because you dont feel that you are going anywhere.
