    Question Dr Pain???

    HI,

You popped up in my journal a few times, and made a very interesting comment

Insulin resistance, apparent in my pics...It is very satisfiying to hear that, as I had thought this long ago...I never was one into just buying into what some authors claim is the problem, but as time went on, I could see how my body reacted to carbs(of any kind)

I am curious to know what it is you saw that would have lead you to this comment...My guess is that I carry most of my bodyfat in the center...(I, when dieted down, have ripped legs, but the ab flab is the LAST THING TO GO) I have no fat on my glutes when lean, none at all, but the abs ugghhh, never will they be my strong point.

I am not one of those women that can sport a 6 pack at 16% bodyfat, I need to be under 10%., but even heavy, I don't have dimples

I really just wanted to start a thread about this, and to compliment you on your very keen eye...Although I have not been treated or diagnosed with IR, (from what I understand, most drs don't accept it totally as a disease) If and when you see fitting, can you explain what you know about it, and how one deals with it and what you saw in my pics to inidicate the problem???...

I could go into further detail, but I will say, that my last 2 contest attempts totally fell through because of Terrible shakiness, dizziness, and just plain horrid feelings when dieting(yes I did it with carbs!) I hired a VERY COSTLY(in the thousands trainer) to train me for the upcoming season, but he did not believe in low carb diets...I knew somthing was wrong, and literelly could not finish a cardio session without breaking into a cold sweat and fearful of driving home in that sugar shake condition. This has been what has caused me to BINGE on carbs in the past and totally wipe out contest prep...I KNEW this to be a body condition, it was not mental...I am strong when it comes to food in my mind, but the diets I have been on in the past for contest preps left me honestly near black outs...I had feared I would not be able to compete because I cannot function...Thank you for being of so much help and knowledge...You are apprectiated
And to find someone with this knowledge is something I have been looking for...

Oh and a tad more info...I used oats and sweet pots for my carbs during this past contest diet, and still had these problems...About 30 gs per meal..120-180 carbs a day. Still slow burners, but it still had me crashing and hour after eating.

Hi Danilee - I'm guessing that the way you carry your bodyfat isn't it....I tend to have a small waist and flat stomach even when I'm not very lean. My fat goes in my butt! But I definitely seem to be IR. We're the opposite. My abs are flat early and my butt fat is last to go. But I think I have definite carb issues too. Changing my diet and cutting the sugar out entirely has helped a lot.

Insulin Resistance?....Call me silly- but I am confused. Does it mean your body cannot lose body fat quickly or while eatting certain foods? I was told to be insulin resistant also- but unsure of what that means. I have minimal body fat on my waist but carry it on my outer thighs.....Anyone care to explain IR?

Insulin Resistance has to do w/ how your body responds to carbs, not where your bodyfat is located.

Any carb you eat is going to cause a rise in blood glucose, in response to that your body releases insulin in an attempt to stabilize glucose levels. If you are insulin resistant your body has to produce higher levels of insulin in order to stabilize glucose, whereas if your insulin sensitivity is high, your body can get the same job done w/ lower amts of insulin. Over time, if not dealt w/ properly, your body will be pumping out more and more insulin, and eventually it will become completely ineffective...this is where type II diabetes comes in.

Following a low carb diet such as the one most of use are on, w/ a bi-weekly carb up will increase your insulin sensitivity.

Insulin is a hormone in the pancreas that regulates the metabolism of carbs by controlling the blood glucose level. Your body is working against this and not doing a 100% job. Most diabetics have a very high blood glucose level! If you have a family history of this you need to keep a check on it!! And also limit high gi carbs from your diet that wiil turn into sugar!

Where to begin? Thanks w8 for the cover!

Danilee, making a call on IR is not difficult, almost 75-80% of the public is! Typically, we look at several factors.........somatotype, genetics (parents and GPs), age, BW, BF, and especailly response to metaboilic changes, both food and age induced! With you, I used BW & BF (from some history that I had acquired), activity level and visceral abdominal tissue VAT, although hardly visable, I knew you stored fat there instead of the typical "women" places like the glutes and hips! You are however, only mildly IR.

The info w8 laid down will give everybody the backround infomation needed to understand IR, but I want to make some clarifying points!

One is that there are DEGREES of IR. Not everyone is full blown IR (unless they shop at Walmart..j/k) Some develop IR as they age, some have fought it and not known it "all of their lives." There are "Fat Skinny Peolpe" and of course almost every meso-endo, or endomorph is basically IR!

Another shocker, the 20% that aren't....including many in the Bodybuilding world, (except maybe the pure mesomorphs).....especially those we call "Hardgainers", would benefit gr8ly form the stadegies we employ with IR. Control insulin/glucagon, and you can control certain aspects of your metabolic rate, amino usage for tissue repair and resynthesis, catabolism, lipolysis and lipogenesis!

Danilee, I would have to ask further questions, but you may have a mild form of hypoglycemia. While the above carb sources are good, we would never ingest them w/o protein fat and fiber! We would have to see the complete program to help more!

This whole topic is very interesting, Thanks Danilee for starting this.

I read the whole article W8 posted and understood most of it. At the end of the 4th article was a link to understanding hypoglycemia. Unfortunately, it didn't say too much about controlling it. My wife is hypoglycemic and has a heck of a time loosing weight. She carries her excess in the typical female fashion, her hips and glutes. She started strength training primarily after I bugged the hell out of her. She still kickboxes at least twice per week with strength training 3 days per week. I keep telling her she's doing too much cardio, but she likes it, so who am I too say.

She bought the audio book "sugar busters" and the companion paper copy. The unfortunate thing is, she's dislexic and doesn't like to read. We, as a family, have been trying to follow the GI charts as much as possible when picking carbs for our meals. I can't get her to take a protein supplement. When she tried, she got gas and decided it wasn't for her. Being a stay-at-home mother of a 5 and 3 year old, she says she doesn't have time to eat every 2-3 hours.

Can you post some advice about controlling hypoglycemia and loosing weight with this condition? I need help getting her to understand why she must do things in a certain way.

    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the wonderul reply, but this thread while extemely helpful left me confused as to how you SAW the slight IR...I think you posted that the abdominal fat IS IN FACT in IDICATOR on IR.

W8, not to disagree with you there, just seemed you said that is not a indicator...Although probably NOT, the ONLY one, I was curious as to how DP could SEE it on me...That could only mean how my FAT and MUSCLE storage is, I guess not sure, but that is why I asked about bodyfat storage, because that is all he had to go on...

My mom has the same I guess problem, although it did not make itself apparent until her late 30s, and 2 c-sections...She does not store alot of fat in the hip ,thigh, glute area(although, she has plenty of SHAPE there, no toothpick legs in our famili I have some thigh-a (thigh size, and flesh as well) but I can see how as I get older my, I guess TIRE around my waist, low waist so it does encompass hips a bit, is the LAST TO GO...

I did not read the info in the links, and I will. But here it goes on the last contest diet, and training that I paid OVER a grand for :o

Initially he wanted me to eat like 1400 cals 6 months out, he did tweak, but gave me no real direction, just said add more food if you want...So, of course I felt whenever I did more food that I was not sticking too it. OK here is the deal

First he straight out 6 months out started me on 45 mins a cardio 5 days a week, AND I worked 3 days a week...Trainined each bodypart with 10-12 sets, 1 time a week(5 days of weights)...So starting 6 months out that was the plan
    Meals
    1/2 cup oats
    6 oz chicken
veggies (this was about 6 times a day, maybe salmon, or eggs but I did not very the carbs sources much, sometimes a sweet potato, sometimes oat bran) I felt bloated, and shaky ALL THE TIME, jones for sugar FOREVER. I new one week I did'nt speak with him, and just ate pro and fat, did'nt count calls, I lost weight, and did'nt even do cardio, dropped a few sizes in 2 weeks, but he coaches IFBB PROS, I found him in ironmag magazine, an article on him, so I regressed and listened to him.

I could not funtion on this, started working only 2 times a week for limited hours(me and sig other said, until after you compete, so that I could get my meals in) I will tell you, I had some BAD sugar probs while working, and literelly could not continue to dance and would have to get off stage to eat...So, I thought ok this is just the way it is going to be, and I tried to stick it through...Story

Coached up the cardio to 7 days a week 45 mins, so
one morn. doing empty stomach cardio(first rode the 5 mins to the gym on my bike) did the cardio, started to get shaky, rode back, realized I forgot my house keys, and could not get in...I knew my sig other would be back in an hour or so, but literelly was not seeing straight, I had to lay there in the hallway in a cold sweat, shaking, thinking I would not make it though...I got on the bike in a blur and rode to the store a few mins a way, confused as hell, could not even count out the money for my balance bar...SHOVED the things in...This was NOT stomach hunger, my whole body was SCREAMING for food...I got back home, sig other was there, and he knew I was locked out, had my meal one ready for me...I ate, and I swear could eat the oats by the boatload, it was no longer about self control...I was HURTING..I felt sooo upset....I did'nt know what to do...Eventually some of this stuff lead to binge eating(and other ED type behaviours) I had to throw in the towel, I would have ended up crazy...

Now with low carbs I have not had a sugar problem since cutting the carbs out...The pics I put up were after 6 weeks on my coaches program( few months ago)...I right now, look ABOUT the same, I don't weigh much more, and may be a touch softer(but I don't think so) and I do NO cardio and said FUCK IT on training many times...Just did'nt eat carbs...I look about the same...

So, everyone hear think I am hypo with IR? Don't the 2 work hand in hand together??? I thought they did

I had wanted nothing more than to train for a show, because I think I could do VERY well(out here in hawaii, even the non tested shows the girls don't have any size) I could not follow through and I felt like a failure...I was dieted before, but with low carbs and I did get to 7% bodyfat, and I tried to hold that for a few months(did'nt work) I am wondering if harsh dieting and low carbs can make a genetic predisposition to IR and HYPO even more apparent, and even more so when again you tell your body you want it to have no fat....AND you are eating carbs every meal...

    Am I special case?

Thanks for reading, you guys are the BEST

Danilee, I think you need to read the links W8 posted. In my understanding, you can't have the 2 conditions together, but I could be wrong. The article states that we need a low carbs, high fats (good fats), and "enough'' protein in our diets. The author even said that we don't need carbs at all. The one thing that confused me was not eating grain fed meats. I have yet to see a chicken eat grass.

    Rob Nc,

Hi, I did indeed read w8s links..Those articles were very vast with information, although it did make carbs out to be the "devil" and from what I gathered, really did not reccommend Loading of carbs, every few days...

I am unsure of the hows and whys of hypoclycemia and IR...I figured one started the other or they were bothe somehow realted...I know for a fact that I suffered from sugar problems, may be that my body could not use the sugar I was giving it, because my insulin was resistant(combined with extreme activity, it also probably left my other hormones like cortisol sky high...Cortisol effects blood sugar regulation as well(I believe, not sure) Well, I am hoping that my jaunt in getting a tad leaner, hardening up a bit, will not have the pitfalls that my past contest prep did. My eyes and ears are open to possibilites, and I am worshipping the Dp and w8 team...

I rambled in my above post, really did give one an idea of the troubles I was having gearing up for competition on my last go around./

Danilee, since you may have a history of diabetes in your family, it really would be a good idea to have your blood sugar checked! If it's over 200, they may want to start you on medication. Since you watch your diet, I doubt that would be the case! Better safe than sorry......

By definition, diabetes is having a blood sugar level of 126 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or more after an overnight fast
(fasting plasma glucose test (FPG) )
