Importance of all food groups..?

Im taking a nutrition class in college this semester and it has opened my eyes to the importance of eating all the main food groups everyday. I've never attempted to do this while lifting and was wondering how important it is to eat all the main food groups when you are trying to put on mass. I hear a lot about calories and protein but what about the simple things like vegetables and fruit?

While there is a certain amount of valid importance placed on each food group, I think its important to remember who designed the "food pyramid" and the motivation behind the placement of different foods as well.

Different foods like milk? I can see milk having a financial motive for being placed on the food pyramid but nothing else. They don't really specify any food to eat within a group besides maybe a food with a certain color. Anyways, they changed the food pyramid...its much better now imo.

Yes and how important is it to get all of your food groups in for bulking?....i used to drink milk and whey protein and maybe a little whole food on the side and i would put on muscle mass very rapidly....so im looking forward to basing my diet off the food pyramid, and supplementing it with protein shakes to see what happens.

I assume the USDA or whatever, that designed this food pyramid, was in the interests of farmers?

Does this seem right?

TIA.

Yep.

The subsidies for vegetables? $0. For soy and grains? $15 billion bux a year.

The pyramid is better than it used to be but no, it aint a bodybuilder's ratio. It's very much dumbed down for the masses and still pushes carbs and dismisses protein.

If you want to look average, go for it. If you want to look like a bodybuilder look a little closer.

Ok let me just be blunt about this, mainstream dietary advice is absolute shit.

Look around, no or low fat, high carbs, protein doesn't matter, right? Sure, and around 65% of people today look like walking fucking blimps, heart disease is higher than ever, cancers are everywhere; it does not work.

But hey, government sez so it must be good.

yes. all food groups are equally important.

americans have the worst diet these days. get this. i used to teach jr. high english in japan. their lunches from the cafeteria are regulated to be a well balanced healthy. tons of veggies, and the right amount of fats and proteins. this was instituted when japan lost in WWII.

decades later the current generation of japanese people have started growing taller and getting bigger. most of my 7th grade students were taller than me, i'm only 5'5'' but still.

look at americans today and you'll see were still big, but in GIRTH for the most part because we've started eating crap all the time. "more HCFS and empty carbs please, with some saturated fat on the side please"

eating in a balanced way from ALL food groups has everything do to with it.

I wouldn't say all the food groups are equally important. For example, I would say grains are more important than dairy in one's diet.

i meant that it's important that each group gets equal attention.. meaning never to exclude any one group completely.

I agree that all food groups are equally important....I just question the percentages/servings recommended. (and the motivation behind the numbers) Obviously, the requirements of someone who is an avid weight trainer or bodybuilder would vary dramatically, depending on specific goals. As far as the average American is concerned, the [old] pyramid seemed a bit high in the grain department.....just made me wonder.

Either way, we Americans have a long way to go re: diet.
